Laser Cigarette Lighter?

Great idea !!!

My girls mother got me a laser scanner from work, but I have not picked it up yet. Not sure what kind it is but I'm assuming its a bar code scanner. Hopefully it has the lens.

It gets hot enough to melt the oil into vapor, but does not burn the plant fibers...thus no smoke. Its more cleaner and less toxic to the lungs. I think stoners use them too...

I have had a bit of a setback on my build. I had intending to use a drive circuit from a DX greenie, I tried 2 of them with a test load and  they are both dead.

I have a rkcstr which will do up to 150ma but I think that may be too low to get things lit quickly...
I am limited to a max of 4.5v, so using an LM317 is not an option,I think I might as well try the Rkcstr and see what happens.

The optics below show the Heatsink block, Sharp GH0780MA2C @ 784nm LD and the lens part of a DX greenie.
As it turned out I could not get this lens to focus close enough so I have replaced it with a glass Aixiz type lens (not shown)

I think what you are reffering to is a vaporizer. They are used by people lookinng for the medicinal effect of hemp, without clogging their lungs with tar and other harmful matter.

Depending on the sought after element in materials such as hemp, the THC is released as smoke but the temp is too low to burn the tar.

In Toronto and in Canada in general we have what is known as the compasion center which victims of disease such as cancer, and MS have an alternative means of ingesting.

Stoners are people who tend to roll joints and get stoned, there is much difference between the two.

Actually a laser powered vaporizer might work. You just need to control the temp for the chamber that your tobacco is in. If you can get the air in the chamber to 400 you'll have more than enough power. Anyone know the equations for heat output of a laser?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

However, that does bring up an interesting point.
Cigar aficionados prize the ability to light a cigar, without the lighting object influencing or "coloring" the taste of the cigars tobacco.
They want the absolute purist taste of the cigar. Lighters, matches, even clean burning butane lighters may leave a residue of the burn that a connoisseur can still taste.

Photons don't taste like anything. -You could bill it as the cleanest cigar lighter in the world. The ONLY way to light a cigar without a chemical reaction coloring the taste.

You could turn the table top lighter idea into a Cigar Club "Jump Spark" type lighter, only using lasers instead of an electric coil.

NOTE:
Jump Spark lighters or "walk up" lighters were installed in old time tobacconist shops and Drug Stores, for the public to use to light their smokes.
In the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life" -in the opening scene, young George Bailey makes a wish on one at Mr. Gower's Drugstore, before starting work.

I think it's a good idea. Remember a few years back watching some videos of people igniting their nic sticks with a laser pointer at wicked lasers site. Even a weak pointer (~125mW + ) will work, tho it can take at least 10 seconds or more.

Whatever the design it should be reasonably safe, so some sort of female device you insert the cig into. tho i think there needs be some way for a little laser light and speckle to escape (so you know it's a laser) .. or perhaps even a clear case which would allow you to see the cigarette get lit, but unable to look into the beam.

to get enough power cheaply, and for longevity reasons, you could use multiple (and inexpensive) DVD diodes driven at spec (for long life). say four or more DVD diodes to get at least 500+ mW (1/2 watt), well focused.

{edit} focusing may be important to ensure a quick and consistent light. Perhaps multiple lasers and a diffraction grating could be used to project a clean disk of light centered on the end of the cigarette.

sorry if this already discussed, haven't looked at the entire topic.

{edit2} just had another brain fart. it's also possible the lens will become dirty enough (from accumulated smoke resin) to require cleaning from time to time. Perhaps a transparent firewall (cleanable) after the laser lens to remedy this problem?

{edit3} another thought. you could use a clear case so you can see the cigarette get lit, but tint the lighter's case so enough light is blocked that you don't get blinded looking at the laser spot - a safe design where you can see the action.

Rog are you going to use a Zippo host? I've been looking at some fine woods, like Birds Eye, Olive wood, ect. I was thinking of using a cut up Zippo for a mounting surface and it would slide into a wooden host just slightly bigger than the Zippo. This way I can carve a window and make a pivot hinge were the tube can be mounted so you could pivot the cig tube back into the host.

I have it mounted in a zippo (type) lighter so that the beam is projected into the flipped over cap, for eye safety... Trouble is I may have fried my only hi powered NIR as I cannot get it anywhere near to burning at the moment :-/ (to test it I connected it to my LM317 bench supply so I know I was giving it enough ooomph) The focused spot doesn't look any different to my working NIR labby.... I will get back to it soon for another look.

I will see if I can do a video of it lighting matches and cigars before I go on holiday, I may not have time though.
