Large neodymium magnet interest?

This is one of those things that I kind of want, but I know I'd inevitably end up damaging something, and probably crushing a part of myself in the process. Nice magnet though.

I've always been fascinated with magnets and have a collection of various sizes, this one being the largest. Its fun to show off and experiment with but I have a 5 yr old and 2 yr old and I have to keep it on a top shelf above my workbench in the basement where it won't hurt anything. Its definitely not a toy! I have a lot of fun bringing it out in the middle of the carpet in the living room safely away from all things metal and busting out the hundreds of 5mm neodymium balls to fling around with it with the kids, its a blast. Other than that, its kinda scary to have in the house.

While I think it would be cool to have, I feel the same way as you except I don't have kids.

I have some of those, 1.5 inch diameter balls though and they are scary strong, the thought of kids getting a hold of it is terrible, good thing you keep it out of their reach. By the way, what kind of price are you asking?

I have a 2x2x1 N54 or N52 (forget which). Scary magnet. I can't put it anywhere within about 3 ft of me, because of the pacemaker wiring to my heart.

Reason I bought it was for work and some entry bypass techniques and locks.

Anyway, my wife plays with it and we keep in another room. It will pull a kitchen knife straight up off the table from about 2 ft away even with your hand in the way.

Have fun....:)

Gonna have to ditto what Ifinitus said. I was looking at some 6 inch diameter neo's the other day, as well as some smaller that still had several hundred pounds of pull force...better judgement ruled out, thankfully.

What would be your price?

And then there's the issue of shipping..

I have 100 very tiny ones only 1/8" x 1/16", I am amazed how powerful they are, I think they are supposed to have 0.8 lb of pull. They are perfect for converting your flat top batteries to button top and they make a great refrigerator magnet, many times as strong as any refrigerator magnet in something so tiny, but they are hard to work with, you can break your fingernail getting one off the fridge or separating them. I don't think I would touch one that was inches in size. I remember when I first went to school to study electronics many years ago, in the electronics lab they had a very large U shaped magnet with a narrow gap at the top. I think they said it was from a magnetron tube from some kind of radar, it was powerful enough that you could smash your fingers enough to be very painful, as a game some people would try to sucessfuly pass something metal through the gap, a few were sucessful while I and many others smashed our fingers. It was entertaining to watch though, some people would even bet money on this.

I've got several 1" x 1" cylinders and also the square 2x2x1 which are scary strong themselves. I would ship it the same way it shipped to me. With plywood planks attached to the poles and excessive space filled with padding! I'm thinking I'll list it today at maybe $85? It was kind of an impulse buy, obviously way bigger a magnet then anyone would need. If anyone is interested I would strongly urge caution and wouldn't be a bad idea to build a small wood box or something to keep it locked up safe. Seems to be stirring up some interest so although today is easter I will try to find a free moment to take a little video of it and post in buy sell trade area.

Ok i posted in buy/sell/trade section, selling for $85 ($75 + $10 to cover shipping), im sure it will sell quickly. Definately needs attention to safety on the same level or higher than handling lasers. Just couldnt justify holding onto it any longer all locked up in the basement not getting any love or attention.

N45 still isn't anything to sneeze at - that size is huge. You can get a very small foam lined carrying case that is perfect for them, which is what I did with mine. (about 6 x 3), Plus I had the magnet wrapped in denim to reduce risk of crushing fingers and such. just a couple suggestions. Especially if you've never dealt with these big ones.

Both, gives it some isolation and makes carrying it easier.

You could also store them in a stainless steel box or container of some kind but these are usually expensive, there is such a thing as "magnetic shielding foil" but I don't know anything about it or how good it works.

I have a ridiculously large neodymium magnet that ide like to sell because its too dangerous to have sitting around. Its a 3" x 2" with 645lb pull force.

If anybody thinks this is something that would gain any traction being listed for sale in buy sell trade section let me know and I'll post there with pics / video demo.

I used to purchase from them as well as a number of other places. I used them for some interesting magic tricks. I had this round tube about 18 inches long....it had a lot of holes through the sides so you could look in....in any case....I give it to you and you drop a a large ball bearing through it and of course, it drops right through. Then, you hand it to me along with the ball and of course the usual abra kadabra and some fairy dust....I drop the ball through and it kind of slowly floats down the tube dropping into your hand...just as heavy as when you gave it to me lol

As for your magnet....they don't have it and I don't know what you paid for it but mailing it is another issue....As I recall they had it in a metal box when shipped....at least the larger ones.

How much you want for it...best to have two so one can catch fingers between them:evil:
