OK, we all know that the Kryton laser barrel groove is about to be finished.  Needless to say, I would like to include an insignia or logo on each of these barrels.  I do not have the skills to do what I'd like to do, so I'm going to offer up a CONTEST.

Contest is as such.  I'll give you a few images of ice crystals that have been formed on a window. I know that we've all seen what those look like but I'm gonna throw it out there.  The idea is to make the word Kryton out of ice crystals.  Essentially it needs to be pretty small with possibly a border around it, however the image for the contest needs to be pretty big so that we can see it.  The image itself would probably be best in graytones or white as it's going to get "printed" or "anodized" on the side of the barrel.  So, going crazy with all kinds of colors would be pointless.  Not that I'm saying don't, but just understand it's probably going to get reduced to a greyscale or white image in the end.

Judging will be essentially a consensus vote.  When submissions have been completed, all the images will be lined up and we all get to vote on them.  I will not be the only one judging this however my selection will be the final selection.  I know there are some very talented graphics people out there and this is the opportunity for you to show off your talents, and let them shine.

The winner of this competition will get a custom anodized Kryton Groove anodized however you want with hopefully your brand new logo printed on the side of your new barrel and everyone that owns a kryton laser barrel will get to see your handiwork.

I know that there isn't much time for this competition but it is summertime for most so there should be plenty of time.  Submissions need to be posted by 2 weeks from today. (august 4th, 2008.)

Good luck to all.

OOOOO!

ME WANTIE!!!

How big will the finished logo be on the barrel? What DPI does this printing process use? Do you know how many scales of grey it's capable of?
I assume it would be best to just provide massive images and let you shrink them to the correct size?

I used to be ace at photoshop.

Not anymore, lost all my skills and creativity :(

Shrinking was essentially what I was thinking.  If you keep it big it's only going to get better as it gets smaller.  to a point that is.
I however do not know as of yet, what it entails to anodize the logo onto the side of the barrel, I'm waiting to get some info on that.  but we've all seen the DX flashlights and how it has the logo on the side of it.  essentially like that. So I've got a basic idea that it will be roughly 20mmx8mm

Oh, and a couple other things, I've got a few ideas for stylistic variations.. are we allowed to submit more than one entry?

Those pics of ice crystals, I assume those are your work, or are public domain images right? We can use those ice crystals in our submissions? If they're pics you shot, could you post the high resolution originals?

Then, do the submissions (or even just the winning submission) become your property or could we use it in say, a portfolio of our work etc?

Thanks for putting this on, I'm going to have fun with this! :)

Some very good question. Those images were found on a simple google search for ice crystals, so I cannot get a higher resolution picture than those that are there. I don't think it would be a good idea to use those exact pictures as they were found on google search and as such may be subject to copyright. The images aren't necessarilly what i'm looking for but some creative license in making your own ice crystal words "KRYTON"

I won't exclusively own the image you create, you will also get to use it as well. Multiple submissions are ok as long as there are differences between your submissions. Not necessarily significant but differences.

So, this is to be a logo, correct?

Firstly, making a logo with a name made of ice crystals is WAY to complex for the side of a barrel. You should keep things as simple and elegant as possible. This is not for 'simplicity of application' purposes, but just aesthetically, simple is good.

Is it just two tone? Black (anodized) and white (non anodized) ? Do you want a vector representation of the logo, or is raster okay?

I'll give it a shot, I've designed a few logos in my time :)

Yes this is to be the logo. Essentially the high quality image will be the one taht will go on the website and such. The image will then be reduced in resolution and size to be on the side of the barrel. You can get an idea from this image.

I'll make it with vectors. That means you can scale it infinitely and it'll never pixelate or mess up :)

I mean, in all seriousness, no one else should even really try. There's no way you're going to beat my piece of art.

Man, I wish blu-rays could really output a squiggly beam. That would be sweet.
