I am thinking about getting one do to the fact I got a raise at work I can know afford one right know. If I end up getting one I will do a review.

Good review Mike! I love all the data you post :beer:

On a side note. I wonder how this company is one of the worst companies in the laser market and they always manage to pull stuff like this out of their @55 last moment. I have go give it to them. This company sure knows how to run the laser market and lure in the customer's!

This draws lots of current but never seems to get warm but I've only run it for about 3 minutes at a time. The battery monitor lights are quick to warn of a cell depleting but the first LED to warn doesen't seem to indicate the end. I havent run a cell to the end point. This is a portable and as such does not have unlimited on time. There's lots to test on a laser like this.

This laser is hell on an 18650! The battery condition lights start a countdown real fast on this laser. maybe I need to clean the contacts again!

Doesn't that mean that's pretty darn bad? im pretty sure a warm host is a sign of good heat distribution... maybe they didn't use any thermal paste lol.
 
A warm host is just a sign something inside the host is running hot. The host would even warm up if there were space (air) between the module and the host as long there is no airflow insight the host to cool the parts. The heat radiation would warm it up too. It´s like with a not well cooled PC.
 
Delay -- The battery spring broke off in my Dino tonight. I was comparing sky beams and it died. I have gutted out the Dino and repaired it but that takes time. The Dino is a nice unit too and I can take it apart to repair when needed!

See review for first IR emission test on the Krypton.

Interesting observation --- Someone asked me about my DinoDirect 300mW. It is a nice laser which can peak to 600 mW and be stable at ~420 mW. After testing the Krypton with an expander, I tried the lens with the Dino. The beam "dances" like the Krypton. Perhaps this condition is typical of higher power portable lasers not having labbie TEC controls.

I remember the acclaim given to the HERC portable. Has anyone ever put a magnifier lens in front of it? Does it "dance" too? It does have fan cooling as I recall.

For those with more knowledge than me -- a question.
Can a laser beam going through a NdYag/Doubler crystal assembly wander about all the time being TEM00 but finding slightly different paths causing different power output and observed "dancing"??

It can dance only if the crystals do not have a fixed position. If the output of the IR diode is constant in terms of electromagnetic radiation, it should not dance. If the crystals are in the ground state while being lased at, I dont think it should. Remember that TEM00 is not a perfect circle, rather it is a spot of concentrated light, and fades exponentially with distance from the center of the emitted area. If any of the crystals, pump diode, or the radiation changes, it can and probably will dance.

The power graph is a little confusing the way it's labeled. Was the total run time 80 or 180 seconds?

BTW, can you do a 5 minute run?
 
Also, with a different battery? Try some cheapo from DX if you have some. I'm very interested in those results.
 
OMG! I can't do math! That graph is 80 Seconds not 180. Good observation.

When I use the expander lens, the beam is mostly round but areas of brightness dance around and sometimes the beam is observed to flicker with a very momentary power drop. With the focused beam, the dancing can't be seen.

I have some older cheepo cells from DX. When I make a power run, I also watch the battery condition lights and usually stop when the middle light starts flickering. 5 minutes is a long time for a portable laser. The head barely warms but it's hell on the cell! Those older "cheepo" cells don't hold up too long at that power.

I'm not interested in the battery lifetime, I am interested in the laser's output with some batteries having crappy impendance and/or unable to supply near 2A of current.

But that's OK. I'm not getting it anyway so :p Just though somebody somewhere would find it interesting.
 
Euda --- It NEEDS A GOOD cell - Really! The one Steve sent with it has no markings but is the best cell I have tried out of 6.

It is too cold and windy tonight to complete divergence tests. The weather here can get nasty suddenly at this time of year.
