Killer deal on USB spectrometer! (update: legitimate!)

Hey alaskan, 808nm emissions from my non-IR-filtered DPSS lasers seem to be reading around 803-805nm. So not too big of a difference, but you'll have to correct for it or set calibration points closer to 808 (mine were 473 and 633 - quite far away.)
 





He asked me to wait 3-4 weeks. Its now been
4 weeks and no tracking number or communication.:yabbmad:
I questioned again through ebay.

He replied quickly and says I'll have a tracking # tomorrow.

I ordered one as well and it took over 4 weeks
to get here. It seems like he builds them as ordered.

I opened it up to have a look inside...
Quality wise... it is slapped together. The slit mounting
slot was cut with a hacksaw while he was drunk or
having a Parkinson's Episode.
The Camera and grating are mounted with double back
tape and the slit is mounted with Scotch type magic
tape.
Now I know why it was so cheap.

I'd get on his butt for a tracking number ASAP.

That is unfortunate. The build quality apparently has much to aspire to. But given that these have an accuracy of 1nm I think I can forgive the build quality - it's still a better deal than anyone could have gotten before for that kind of precision. :beer:

I agree... for the price I can live with the lousy
build quality. That's why I didn't open a duspute.

I'll just need to be extra careful not to shake or
jostle the enclosure too much to dislodge any badly
mounted parts inside.:yh:

My USB2000 has 2048 pixels and has a very solid optical bench with all optics made of metal (except, of course the CCD) and it requires eight lines for proper calibration and the manual states it needs to be recalibrated yearly. Even this very solidly built spectrometer drifts somewhat over time according to the manual.
 
For those who think the USB2000 spectrometer uses a lens, I assure you it doesn't. It has a slit, a collimating mirror, a diffraction grating and a focus mirror, all made of highly polished metal alloy. They are all mounted very securely in a machined optical bench that weighs about 400 grams. It seems to me to be made to drift as little as possible, but since it can be set to resolve a line down to 0.1nm (according to the manual) I guess it can drift.

with a few drops of UV cure glue.

I try to talk my dentist into giving me
outdated glue. He can't believe my
405 lasers! RAPID cure.

I can see it now. A dentist using a BDR-209 laser to cure dental fillings. Could be painful. JK. :D
 
I should mention that I defocus
the output for glue.
Actually, my dentist's "UV" device
looks more 450 nM.

Hope that doesn't make it impossible to refocus it. I have no idea what this guy is using to get a beam collimated to the camera he uses.

Hi Hemlock Mike and Paul,

The modern light-curable dental fillers cure at 450nm, the older ones I think did at 405nm only. This is because of new generation of photoinitiators.

My friends chemists now start to commercialise a super glue setting at same WL range thanks to a similar PI, but of course much cheaper than stuff for dentists.
