killed 2 diodes just want to know how lol

I have...... had
a kryton build with an lpc 826 using a x drive
and a kryton build with a 12x 405nm using an x boost

both were just led'd the same way. they've worked fine until 10 minutes ago.

I didn't have the tail caps but wanted to try out my new lpm so i pulled out my red kryton and held a wire to the battery and the case. I haven't removed all the ano on the host yet so I moved the wire until I found a good spot, the laser lased at full power for a second and then led'd. I said F*** S*** A** and tossed it up to my luck with loc diodes. I've destroyed more than I can count.
tried the same thing on the 405nm and bam led'd. WTF I'm stumped. can't for the life of me figure this out.
any ideas?
 





405 and 650 diodes are not resilient like the new 445 diodes. You just shocked them and pop goes the diode.

BTW if you ever want to sell the host let me know. I just sold a groove host and regret it :(

Were you pushing the current limits on the diodes?
 
Send me your shipping address in a PM and I'll send you a new LCC GGW diode, be sure to short you driver before hooking it up and 400mA would be good for this diode.
 
Actually if the laser diode is soldered into the circuit is should be safe from static electricity or ESD unless your testing it with a taser :crackup:

ESD usually happens when the leads of a semiconductor device are open and a voltage potential can get across them, when they are shorted or soldered into a circuit the circuit or short will take care of 99.9% of ESD I'm pretty sure.

With that said remember there is always an exception to the rule but my money says there is something wrong with the driver or the wiring so check that before hooking up and more laser diodes to it, do you have a test load ?

Remember to always short out the output of your driver before soldering the laser diode to it to kill the charge in the output capacitors which can build up to something higher than the LD likes to see.
 
I have well had a full set of krytons. red through violet, all worked fine until earlier tonight. esd sounds possible, they are case - if that means anything.
 
I can't say on the 405nm as the diode should have no worries at all with the x-drive.

However, the LPC diode has to be case isolated to use with the X-drive I think what happened is the anodized host was some how bypassed as you took the current reading from the tailcap, prolly what happened to the 405nm as well I don't know how you have them rigged.

Did you use the case pin on the 405nm to the -cathode.?
 
Huh, I wonder if this is what killed my OC diodes too... ive successfully killed 4 or 5 of them now...
