Seriously I'm not a violent person and I would avoid conflict but if I'm in an alley going home and someone
pulled out a knife on me I would whip out my 445 in an instant and not think twice about blinding the stupid
idiot, if some one pulles a knife on me they deserve what they get.
Self defence is self defence I don't care what kind of weapon you use !
and if it came down to it, I don't think you would be found guilty of using a deadly weapon either JMHO.

I strongly advise against bringing a laser pointer to a knife fight.

On another note I don't plan to use my lasers as self defence but again tbh if I had one on me and had someone with a knife come towards me I'd be pulling it out or running...Trust me you don't wanna mess with the people in my street :tinfoil:

We all live in different parts of the world, so laws will vary...

Where im from, pointing even a 5mW laser into a persons eyes carries
an assault charge.

If the person who is hit experiences physical pain, and testifies to it,
the charge can easily stick.

Shining a 3b or class 4 would most likely cause damage, which could be proven
by a simple visit to an eye doctor. As stated in the OP it was not aimed
at the eyes, but could have happened..

In such a case, the charges could easily be applied as 1-assault, 2- assault
causing bodily harm 3,4, and 5 would be whatever they want to tack on
for leverage or just to make an example.

There are scenarios where you may find yourself in, and have a
stick, bat, what have you within reach. This would be called a 'weapon of opportunity'

But if you are carrying an object like a laser and its used for defense, you
could be facing weapons dangerous charges.

If your life is in danger its one thing, but in this situation, I think
you still had an out, and if felt genuinely threatened there
was no need to stop and demand that he leave. This on its
own could easily escalate the situation, and could be
spun against you in court. You were not backed into
a corner so to speak.


If you find yourself in a situation that may be dangerous, continue on your
way. Keep walking and avoid it. You cannot determine an outcome, and walking
away at least gives the chance of nothing coming of it.

Confrontation should be a last resort..

If you cant deescalate a situation, and cant avoid it by any means, only
then should you get further involved.


The more people in the laser community reinforce high power lasers as
weapons by using them as such, the more attention the subject gets
and the faster new laws can come into play.

This word dazzling that keeps coming up, IMO is a sugar coated
marketing ploy from companies like WL, and does not justify taking a
persons sight or even damaging it. Not when you can walk or in the case
of the other thread on this topic, drive away..

You may be right here but did you know the hells angles carry ball peen hammers around with them for the last 30 years because they are not concidered deadly weapons, they go on the premmis that they are tools and are used to fix there motercycles with.
when asked why I would carry a laser everwhere with me I would just state it's a tool and I use it to point out stars with.

Im just throwing out there, any consequences I can think of. There are a lot
of youngsters on this forum, and wouldn't want to see any make a mistake
that can follow them for a long time..

Getting lasers banned, or at least contributing would be bad too :undecided:


In my younger days I worked security at Gov. housing. I have had encounters
with junkies trying to stick myself or a partner with dirty needles..

Aside from a 26in straight stick (which requires licensing) no gun and your 'dukes'
there is not much barrier between you and a possible violent scenario.

Part of the act that governs licensed security in my province also does not allow
aerosols like pepper spray...

We used them legally to deal with dogs, and they were seen as a weapon of opportunity
when the paperwork was worded correctly if used on a person..

I also had worked in homeless shelters which is an entirely different breed of maniacs.
Most of the people were good, and just had bad luck in life..

Others were ex-cons who didn't mind a good scrap when they didn't get their way.
There is no easy solution in many situations, but there is a level of responsibility
we all must take and not exceed what is necessary to preserve our own safety..

higher powered lasers are going to be banned its only a matter of time, the only thing u can really do is stock up on high powered diode and high powered laser parts for when they do become illegal somday

Well actually, with my dad behind me, and the drunk right in front of me with a knife I was a little cornered. And we were all the way at the end of my alley, so it's not really like I could have walked anywhere.

Here in the ghetto of Hagerstown, cops don't treat drunks or druggies very nicely at all (probably because there are so damn many of them). If the drunk I was dealing with claimed assault with a laser they would just have a good laugh about it and then shrug it off. Maybe if it hit him in the eyes it would be different though. And I AM very glad that I didn't hit his eyes with it.

Very nice pianoman2011. If someone was coming at me with a knife I wouldn't hesitate for a second to use any means possible to get them away from me. If they are attacking me with a knife and got blinded by my laser they'd deserve it. If I ended up being sued... who cares... at least i wasn't stabbed

haha thats a tough one!
Sometimes you feel like youd rather get stabbed than sued. Its a long process that you need to hire expensive attorneys for. Let alone a violent criminal charge. Imagine not being able to make bond on something stupid like that.
