Hello,

I am currently trying to sell my MacBook Pro, and then with that money I plan to buy either a desktop or a laptop PC. A friend suggested I buy THIS. What do yall think? Also, have any of you used that site before?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Isaac

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

Looks good. You guys get better prices on computers in the states, so I can't really tell you if that's a good deal for not :p

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

If it's legit, the specs look good and for 650 bux. Its definitely better then a macbook :D :P

Oh and newegg.com is good from what Ive seen.

I agree with Karthracer, It does look like a pretty good computer with i7 processor and 1 terabyte of hard drive.
Dell is also a good company to buy from when it comes to computers. Overall I think you should get it if it is in your price range. :)

How about build your own desktop. It's a lot of fun. I build my own desktop 5 years ago but that's it. I'm now too broke to upgrade.

What do you use your computer for?

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

Yeah zeebit is right I forgot, it also depends if you use your computer for video games, surfing the web, ect. . Because if you play games on it you probably want a fast computer but if you just surf the web you can get a computer with i5, quadcore, or i3 processors ; and you dont need as much RAM

Actually I have decided to get a laptop because I really need it to be portable. I am looking at this:

HP Envy M6
AMD A10-4600M 2.5Ghz(3.3Ghz with Turbo Boost)
Radeon HD 7660 Integrated Graphics
6GB RAM
750GB HDD

Price will be 599.99 and I might be getting the tax off cuz a friend works for best buy.

What do yall think? The only games I'll play are Skyrim for PC and Minecraft

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

Just curious: What are the specs on your Macbook Pro? Going from that to an HP AMD machine doesn't make any sense to me.

I've built 5 systems over the last 10 or so years and now I'm great with my Macbook Pro.

For ANY systems, however, I would check Microcenter.com, first. They do have two retail locations in TX and the most competitive pricing on Macs AND PC's. It's like Newegg, but they also have in-the-flesh retail stores with even better pricing than the big websites.

Check them out.

About a year ago, I got a brand new 15" MBPro spec.'ed out with a hi-res anti-glare display from microcenter for about 700 less than the identical one configured at the Apple store, except that it was one model prior, so I missed out on all of 0.2Ghz in processor speed (and a bump of .333Mhz in bus speed) (DAMN! ;p).

They tend to buy systems in bulk and offer great pricing, especially when the newer models come out.

As far as HP vs. Dell, I think what I've seen lately from HP is really nice, but GET AN INTEL SYSTEM. Forget about AMD.

As with everything, it pays to do your research and wait it out until you know you've made the right choice...then get what you want! Good luck!

The Intel and apple fanboyism is strong with this one.

What do you have against AMD and the PC? Just because Intel processors outperforms AMD in the recent years doesn't mean that AMD sucks.

@wannaburnstuff - that seems ok for everyday computing but don't expect it to play games really well except for minecraft, of course. There may be other laptops that will be better than the one you linked. I can't really say if that is good for it's price as I am more familiar with desktop pc components.

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

My Macbook Pro has an Intel Core Duo. I upgraded the RAM in this machine to 8 GB and I upgraded the Hard Drive to 500 GB @ 5400RPM. My main issue with this computer is that it is 3 years old and is always making me reinstall the OS and stuff. I want the AMD processor because I want the Radeon graphics instead of the Intel graphics. The processors are not that much different. They have the same clock speed as i5's and many i7's.

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

@ Zeebit: I've been computing since 1993 and i have over ten years of experience BUILDING PC's. I'm not a 'fanboy' - I have EXPERIENCE working with HARDWARE for both MACs and PC's. My APPLE hardware is working perfectly, that's why I LIKE IT. The 'outperforming' of Intel is enough to make me LIKE it and think that it is better supported by software. I NEVER said anything derogatory about AMD. The old paradigm of PC vs Mac, etc. is TIRED and BORING. It's just a choice. I'm just offering my educated opinion backed by years of experience. That's all. If you want to belittle my opinion by calling me a 'fanboy' go for it - but what it indicates to me is that you're just young, inexperienced or JEALOUS.

@ wannaburnstuff: Go with Radeon if you like it - but I'm sure you can find and Intel/Radeon machine. Just a thought.

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

For any kind of gaming IMO you are better off with a dedicated video card, NOT integrated. Skyrim will likely run on low to medium low setting only on that laptop.

I'm a fan of intel/nvidia, having used both. Intel is geared better for the higher end market, but AMD is also fine for low or mid range computers.

The reason I like nvidia more, is they seem to put more effort into drivers and support.

Edit: I've seen better deals for laptops over black friday. Keep your eyes on the slickdeals forums..

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

Dell has quality customer support - even with their Indian accents. I've had good luck with their warranty work.

I head horror stories about HP customer support before - But I don't own an HP machine. I know a few years ago (4 years?), I would avoid HPs like the plague. All my friends got them when they entered University and they haven't kept their speed up after this time.

After 4 years, my Dell Latitude is still going strong on Win 7 and loads programs near instantly, like the day I got it.

Hope this helps,

-Tyler

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

If your Mac is making you reload the OS, you probably have bad sectors on your drive and it could be about to fail. You could upgrade to drive that has more space and faster spindle speed, 7200rpm, as I imagine your current drive probably runs at 5400rpm. This would be a quick and easy fix and you will gain improvements in performance. You should be able to get at least 5-6 years out of your Macbook Pro. Call me a 'fanboy' but the fact is, they hold their value.

InfinitusEquitas made great points with regard to a dedicated video card. I agree completely. I've had issues in the past with Radeon and drivers with system builds.

Dell is always a good choice for hardware and support. I just can't stand all the little apps they load onto their machines.

If I had the cash and wanted a Windows laptop, I would probably go with Alienware. They're a little pricier, but very well configured.

Re: Need advice for a new computer please

Whatever you choose to buy, save $100 or so to upgrade the hard drive with an SSD. That is the secret to making these laptops feel like performance machines.

Hell, I still use my 2007 laptop for that very reason: the SSD has made even that old laptop feel like a champ.
