I'm new, but i had a great idea dealing with 445 goggles

Talking about alternative goggle solutions, Ive had some luck with cutting torch goggles and an automatic welding hood.

Those are the worst.

First. They are not made to block anything over ~350nm.
Second. They dilate your pupils, so more of the light enters your eye.

If you get a direct hit, they offer no, 0, nada, protection.
 





sorry to burst your bubble but a square of welding hood glass bounces of all of my 200mw green , nothing gets through it, and it wont burn it. if it did thpugh you are right about the pupils thing. also if it only blocked up to 350 then why would it appear black? if it only blocked to 350 then it would let all visible light through and appear clear would it not?

I just got these today in the mail-

They have been tested by Kenom here on the forum with excellent results. The seller seems to be out of them at this moment but keep checking back. It took a few days for them to repost a new auction last time they sold out.

I understand what you are trying to do and respect it but i have been playing around with lasers for quite some time and am no noob. I am perfectly capable of taking care of my own eyes, just trying to find a cheaper solution. I am pretty sure you are no stranger to that, or you wouldnt make diy laser you would just buy them from Wicked lasers, right? there is always a more cost effective way to get an object than buying it premade. How else would people make money?
 

This guy has the real glasses and diy, You all can be the judge.
the only thing I would want is all the clear plastic rim to be painted black

Cheech you are awesome, thanks man. now you see this guy uses one layer and it reduces , ohh id say that green was a 50mw, al the way down to <5mw at least, i cant say for sure cause its a vid but it was probably <1mw so thats about OD1+ (if you read above i said 1 layer was OD.9). Now imagine with 3-4 layers just like i said. congo blue i cant say was the best choice to block red but that was about a 200mw red down to like 10-20mw red so still about OD1+.

Okay, as long as you're being safe I'd be interested in your tests. (Guessing <5mW may be tough but...). It is contrary to perceived wisdom but you sound like you know that. Maybe there's more technical information that will be posted for a definitive reason not to use these gels but at least you seem to have thought it out.

Just as a side note: If you're only aiming for 300mW of 445 then the MicroBoost is more than capable up to 1A, (roughly a Watt depending on your diode efficiency), so you don't HAVE to wait for the Flexdrive. ;)

Jeez, Ben, you sure have managed to summon opposition! I'm a little surprised since the motto here seems to be "build it yourself". Perhaps that only applies to things they've already tried... or perhaps it's just a liability bandwagon? Either way...

Maybe theater gels will work, or maybe it'll burn right through. I for one look forward to your results. I have several gel sample books (I'm a sound/light tech), and will soon have a 1W Spartan. Maybe I'll play around with it too. (Before anyone says it, YES with proper safety glasses on, of course.)
 
true i dont have to use a flex drive but im sure sometime in the future i will feel the need to test out the diodes true strength and would hate to waste another 25 bucks. and yeah flashfire i was suprised that everybody here is all about diy but then i suggest something completely pheasable with data sheets and everything and they jump on me but whatever. and i just held my 200mw green and shined it in my eye through a welding glass and it did nothing. this is an ir filtered laser and i have tested for this. Also i said nothing of the pros being wrong just that my particular goggles reflect 532, there are many variants of welding goggles so your might not but mine do. and to flashfire, my theory is that it the theatre gels melt point is higher than plastic and laser goggles are made of plastic, it should hold as long and probably longer than plastic goggles if you make it the same thinkness as the plastic.

yeah i would think on this forum about diy i wouldnt get so much oppostition. and technofreak i said nothing of the pros, i just disagree with how you think you know everything about the physical properties of my welding glass when i can look through it right into my laser and see no light. and morgan thank you for seeing my side, all im saying is that the facts point to it working and its only 6 dollars for a sheet , and im holding out for the flexdrive because i know in the future i will want to test out its full power at least once.

Also that graph of yours says really nothing. It says zero, but you want to know if iti is 0.1% (which would be bad) or 0.01% (which would be better) or 0.001% (which would be fine). You need logarithmic optical density graph.

If you want to have real cheap but working glasses, try these:

Some people received them broken, and some people did receive different glasses, but they work great.

Good glasses should not let any of actual laser color through. If you start to see actual color of the laser, you are on the edge of your glasses capabilities. You will be able to see the 'dot' even with good glasses, because most materials will glow in different colors when hit by lasers, so with orange glasses you will see orange dot.

Those O-like goggles actually look (and work) exactly as those cheap focal price.
 
ohh those are only 8 dollars and free shipping. you say they work, i think i just might get them. hopefully they will come in one piece.

Edit: wow i was reading your sig, 200mw 35mw actual thats crazy. I got ripped on a green once, it came with no crystals so it was just an ir

That is all the fun in Chinese shops .. sometimes you get good glasses for $8, sometimes you get 35mw instead of 200mw (yeah I knew no chance it would be 200mw, but I expected at least 100mw).
 
This forum is all about DIY. But its also about safety first. Nothing here trumps safety. Yours may work, or may not work, but what happens if a kid gets the idea its ok, and he doesn't have the same lens as you? Now with the breakthrough of the 1W laser pointer, there should never be talk about anything but proper eye-wear. Its not worth it, and you have to keep in mind kids read this forum too. Good luck.
 
There really is a flaw in my theory. I gladly use cheap glasses .. because I was able to test them on safe power. If someone only has class 4 laser and no way to test it .. then I would want certified glasses too.
