NOTE: this isn't a "what should I buy???" Thread, (though I am in the market for an argon) I want to know what some of you gassers like and reasons why.
Argon, HeNe?
Spectra-Physics?
JDS uniphase?
LEXEL model 90, 75?
Coherent?
Melles griot?
Something 3 phase? (causing you Californians to black out San Jose):angel:
Low power? High power?
SL ML?
DPSS?

Helium-Selium with external mirrors.

Would use Ar/Kr mirrors to lase up to 24 lines covering the entire visible spectrum.

Or perhaps a CuBr...

Maybe it's a tie :)
 
Wow those^^ lasers are intense I just read your previous post on TEA Cu vapor, I can relate about not wanting to have cylinders in your dorm. I travel a lot with work and naturally build various laser projects where I go~ sometimes I wonder if the hotel staff think I'm building something scary. Hm
 
I'm with bloom on this one. Or a mercury vapor. Or a xenon-helium excimer laser

I'd just go for a good ArKr at this point with the yellow and red lines. Then i'd set my sights higher after that :P
 
I think I would be happiest with a CuBr :D I hear the yellow is beautiful (and slimy xD).
 
Maybe a Reliant 300WC or one of the other lower power air cooled Whitelights.

Easier to fire up a 40 pound 15-20" mixed gas and maintain, than a 9' behemoth. Especially in a small condo. I've been drooling over getting a SMALL whitelight for years.

A 612 HeNe is high on the list also, beautiful color and super hard to find.

as I'm a fetishist of rare wavelengths a working and powerful copper vapor or small sized argon/krypton mix gas system would be a dream!

Also a tunable dye laser would be great... but I'm already collecting all the parts for a DIY nitrogen TE laser :beer: -> removed from wishlist!
 
If I could ever have / or operate ANY gas laser, I would go with D2O laser (heavy water vapor).

It's well into far-infrared, however at MIT labs it was used by the boss for timing the frequency of light and thus measuring the speed of light for the first time at its absolute accuracy.

But personally I think the big lasers belong to labs or factories where there is an application for them, not a household.
 
All these lasers sound pretty cool, I've never heard of a D2O and a CuBr would be neat. It is true though some lasers belong in a lab setting. I have a family member whom works with a holmium Yag. On a regular basis and I can't imagine having one of those in the basement. Especially since they are outside the visible light spectrum. Cheech226 just sold me an argon ion so ill be happy to experiment with that.
 
i'd like one of those big yellow lasers that are used in astronomy to produce a guide star for adaptive optics in large telescopes.
more realistically tho, i'd like a laser physics reliant white light that's tunable.
 
I'm actually currently working on a design for a HeSe or HeHg.

The latter will be easier than the former.
 
Lexel 88, could use easily at home and also incorporate it into a projector. Alternatively a reliant 300wc
