@chipdouglas: I was making the thinly veiled hint that it'd be a good idea to get a familiarity with Ohm's Law first :shhh: For too many people here that already seems to class as "rocket science".

The minimum really is a voltage regulator followed by a resistor and then a capacitor across the LD pins to supress spikes. Perhaps a diode in there for polarity protection in the regulator doesn't incorporate that feature which I think all do. Then you should be fine.
