How much would you pay for a self-driving car?

It seems that self-driving cars are a hot subject these days. An autonomous vehicle would undoubtedly be quite useful. Of course, they'll probably also be a bit expensive - at least at first. So I'm just curious: how much would you be willing to pay for one, relative to a non-self-driving car of the same type?

Me? I personally wouldn't spend more than 25% extra.

and i love driving. taking the people out of driving is like burning the word "drive" all together.

One of these would be great for bar hopping, but beyond that it serves no purpose.

I can not see how these would even be safe unless almost everyone "drove" one.

I would feel extremely vulnerable being driven around by a computer with limited sense of what was going on around me. I can not fathom a computer being able to see/feel/hear and respond to all the stimuli a real person uses to get safely from point A to point B.

If this were an option, it would actually easily force me into actually buying or leasing a new car, and I would be very willing to pay a 25% plus premium.

I LOVE driving. I also love my time though. If I could jump into my car, set an address, and read a book on my way there, watch a movie, or work, it would be incredible. Currently my commute is relatively short, but that hasn't always been the case. If I had a self driving car, I would also be far more likely to commute further.

On a car with good gas mileage, it would also make longer driving trips a whole lot more pleasant.

Those of you who are thinking drinking will be possible whistle: Cheech :na can forget about it though. Unfortunately. Even if the car is self driving, an operator will still be required to be capable of taking over in the event of problems.

We, human beings I mean, experience hundreds of stimuli at any given time. If you sit back, relax, and actually take stock of yourself, you will be able to catalog all kinds of sensations.

When driving a car, realistically, only our vision is used, hearing also, but to a much, much lesser degree. Theoretically this puts us far at a disadvantage versus any number of sensors that can be implemented in a self driving car. Radar, sonar, cameras, gps, car to car communication... all of these would provide a far better picture versus the ability of a person to see from inside most cars. Blinds spots... not an issue.

In terms of reaction time, it takes about 1 second for a person to actually hit the break, after they become aware that they need to brake... at best .25 seconds. This is painfully slow versus what a computer system would be capable of.

Lastly... self driving cars have an ace up their sleeve that most of us do not...

Situational awareness. With the added perception capabilities a self driving car can be aware of other cars surrounding it, to a far greater degree... this means your car can react to a situation that you as a human operator, would not even be aware exists yet, much less requires action.

I prefer driving a car, not car driving me, lol.

I would pay up to 1% more than regular car, but I never buy new cars. (but having a car with that option is, hm okay)

Instead, I buy a second-hand car in a good shape, cause it is more than 50% cheaper, and you get around the same quality. (few years old)

thank you!! exactly, i dont get the "its not safe" attitude. every single accident is causes by human error. when you take that away...

no speeding
no running lights
no swerving
disobeying traffic signs
running a stop sign or not waiting your turn at a 4 way
etc etc
and of course the computer will have a much much quicker response time than a person

also other uses besides bar hopping:

1 elderly
2 people with physical disabilities or mental
3 under age people
4 people with no desire to learn to drive
5 people that want to be productive while in the car

Should car driving AIs become sufficiently advanced, I'm all for it. I've always believed that machines can do anything a human can do. However, right now I don't trust that we're to the point that AI can drive cars to the left of even many unsafe drivers. That "human error" factor doesn't just affect the driver causing the error. Self-driving cars would be good for places like Afghanistan for supply transports though.

As for the people above, I'd rather see them take the bus or call a taxi.
