Hotlights PHR at 106mA

Hmm. The drivers based on that IC are regulated thru the '+' (if you're using the positive terminal regulators) so you can just wire the - of your diode to the host and the - of your flashlight to the host. Just beware to not touch the host with the battery +, the driver + (or diode +) or the ADJ pin. It will screw up the whole thing :)

If you want the opposite, use a negative terminal regulator. Wire the + to the host and the diode + to the host, so you will have a POWER plane instead of a GND plan.

LM1117 is a common regulator. You can use it as a negative or positive.
Commonly if you need a negative one, just get the positive (most common) datasheet. You could find it as "Negative version: LMxxxx".

As I said somewhere, beware with the LM337 and 338. 337 is a LM317 but negative instead of positive, while the 338 is a LM317 with 5A maximum. If you use a negative regulator with positive input or vice-versa, you WILL end up blowing up the diode.

hmm by the way, the LM1117 can be used both sides, Positive and Negative. Beware with the datasheets "typical applications", we use those regulators as "CONSTANT CURRENT REGULATORS", not CONSTANT VOLTAGE as the datasheets shows schematics etc.

Oh, yeah, I know the constant current part. Appreciate it though.

Seems like my driver is *finally* ready to be constructed, once I get the host and parts in the mail (will be *quite* a while, though).

Oh crap, I forgot this is Silvershot thread dude. We are hijacking his thread (sorry silver). Open your own and update your build progress there.

Hey I don't have time to read the last posts but to answer wolfmans29's question, an extra wire from the other end of the capacitor to the case/negative pin (or if you use the case pin as positive connection soldered to positive pin, connect the driver output - to the negative pin and run an extra wire from positive/case pin to the driver +).

Oh and, no hijacking there. Diy builds often create questions, thus, it the thread NEEDS to answer these questions. Feel free to discuss here. ;)

Also, @ Leo, so lm1117 is neutral in input/output, meaning you can use it as - and + ?
