Holy @#$%... $100 488nm diode!!

That diode is rated at 60 mW and I bet if its pushed to 150mW itl emit maybe even a >490nm band!

Actually I am pretty sure that is part of the path to us getting N***** diodes. Remember that they don't accept orders <10000 units, so somebody typically has to sneak diodes out.

Yeah I bet when n company diodes fail spec they are disposed of a special way where the guy who is supposed to destroy them just sneaks them away

Why would an individual order straight from the vendor? Only a business would buy in bulk from the vendor (unless you have a lot of spare cash), and we're the ones that buy from those businesses who sell them individually such as eBay stores and other Chinese sources etc. Also, good luck sneaking out of an automated mass production factory with a good load of their products in possession without getting caught.

I'm not sure if DTR purchases his diodes individually or semi-bulk (<100) or if his sales are large enough to buy directly from the vendors. I'm pretty sure he harvests from projectors too.

Again with the over driving these thing. You really want to risk popping something so rare?
I would wait until there more abundant before risking killing one.
 
It just shows the mentality of the forum now. Just a year ago, the mere mention of overdriving one of these would be blasphemous and get you laughed right off the forum. I just replaced two diodes in $$$$ diode lasers, that were dead at 500 some hours at -rated- current. It's true that multimode ones tend to be a lot more forgiving, but those people who actually use these diodes for their -intended- purpose, know that scientific diodes are made with much more stringent parameters. Even if you over drove one successfully and backed it back down, it would likely have suffered severe damage. I have to admit a 488 handheld would be cool, but it's a waste of a diode that could be used for so much more. SM diodes are much smaller and fragile from the wide compliance 'trash' put in projectors. If these are legitimate then please be respectful of what you're getting. Don't be greedy for power and WL shift.

We can stop holding our breath. They are at best 445nm. They look like maybe N***** diodes based on the raw output and the box reflection from the dye as opposed to the triangular shape dye reflection that I have seen with Osram diodes. They might even be multimode but make a real nice dot but are not oval shaped like the other single mode diodes but a large thick bar like the M140. First thing I did was power one and compare to the 445 NDB7875 unit that I use to test lenses that is sitting on my workbench and the NDB7875 was higher wavelength.:(

See this. Does anyone have a compaison with those 50mW or whatever N***** multimode diodes that were going around.

Seriously though. Would you be able to get your money back? This was a terrible scam.
 
Aaaand game over. All those aboard the "not-real" team have won the game! That sucks DTR that you had to put money, time, and stress towards it, though a few were expecting it.

Lesson learned? Looks like we shouldn't jump on things that seem too good to be true and need to be careful next time. Maybe ask them for video proof or spectrometer readings if this happens again.
