Highest Green before burning hazard

I was just wondering...seeing that the FAQ didn't speak of this.

Unlike many here who keep their lasers in the padded case just prior to use, I keep it in my pants when I'm on the go, even around the house.
It is an unconditional guarantee that as long as I'm in public I'm wearing black pants, which I EDC my [at the moment, Galileo-5] laser in. Tan doesn't look right on me and I feel naked wearing shorts around people...for now lets just leave the kilt off the table here. :-[

I'm wondering what is the highest power I can go on green before I hit the hazard of barbecue downstairs. Should it, by laterally exerted pressure [I.E. sitting down, bumped, squat, kneel, you name it and chances are my keys had it], engage and ssss.... ouch!

I'm assuming with IR filter in place it shouldn't exceed 50mw, but I don't know for sure.
Granted that given duration of exposure, temperature, and flammable material any >25mw laser will burn, What I'm referring to is the limit before hitting the "insta-burn" area.

You're the first person ever to ask this question that I'm aware of.. I can't remember hearing that it's ever been a problem at any handheld power level, but I guess if you had like a 750mW - 1W laser it might be able to start a fire in your [black] pants, so to speak..

No pocket sized green bill burn your pants. Also, an IR filter doesn't really affect the burning performance of a laser.

You're the first person ever to ask this question that I'm aware of.

This I find surprising, surely there are responsible members here that at least question the safety of these things...stuff like the Hercules just scares me....even if I have that kinda money on the conscious it still feels like I'm carrying a phosphor flare in my backpocket :-/

well given the concept of modifying a flashlight to burn most of the heat is contributed by infrared energy. Now even if IR radiation leaks and up to 200mw is attained...its still 200x10^-3 Watts and at a dot not bigger than a grain of sand. Which in my head it feels like the proportion is just right...one of these days I might plant of of those little thermocouples, [the K type?] on a grain of sand, sharpie it, then attack it with the laser just to see what it would read

Somewhere between the first and the last part got me worried, so thanks for the reassurance.

My x series clocks in at about 220mW and while I don't think it would start a fire, it would be very painfu if it turned on at the right moment. What color are the liners of your pockets? 200mW goes right through dark fabric. So while the statement "no pocket size laser will burn your pants" is true in the sense that they won't catch on fire, a pocket sized pen will easily put little holes in your pocket

Nope. There are no responsible people here.. We're all a bunch of irresponsible idiots with no regard for safety. That's why there is a "Safety" portion of the forum with no posts in it. See if you can find it..

You're worrying about a non-issue. If you want to worry about something, worry about keeping your eyes out of the beam. That's the real danger.

Been there, thankfully with a >5mw red laser...not a >5mw green
16 under the belt, don't know sh!t from a pack of gum, thought it would be fun using a laser in a chandelier store...well one prism that really isn't got hit and well... one of my eyes have a higher prescription than the other...the rest is self-explanatory :'(

I'm 21 now...and whenever I see kids pointing a laser in a crowd I feel like socking somebody....
they really don't know until its too late.
