Help with I.D.'ing Laser Diode

ok, fellas. Sorry it is taking me so long, I have some reports to file and am getting them done and online. I am getting to the scan shortly. Thanks for your patience guys.

@ ramsey and qume, have you guys actully harvested a laser from a dvd burner. years ago i did a 16x and it had the flat diode and the regular diode. it is possible he might have extracted the wrond diode.

michael.

Yes I have harvested diodes out of drives. :p And all the 'flat' package diodes i've come across have been combination IR/660 diodes. I can actually get them new from the same supplier as I get my lenses from if you want some new flats to play with.

qumefox,

I apologize for not understanding you. Do you recognize that package? If so, then which package is it?

Are the pictures clear enough for id'ing? Is this the correct package?

Is the beam capable of thermal ignition?

Specs?

**qumefox, I have a special project for a client of mine to complete, I have all of my parts & components fabricated custom for my client's application. I just need to know is this the right diode for it.

Like I said. it's most likely a flat package 660nm/780nm combo diode. The 660nm side will be good for 200-250mW if it came out of a 20x dvd burner.

I find it hard to believe something for a 'professional application' for some 'client' would require scavenging diodes from dvd burners. Raw red diodes are in no way expensive or hard to get. And if your building lasers on a 'professional' basis... Sorry.. but just going by your thread here.. your probably in the wrong line of work.

You'll probably find your diode here actually looks like this.

T14FV2XfJlXXXnr9IS_010139.jpg_310x310.jpg

and you'll be hard pressed to adapt it into any of the existing aixiz type housings designed for round TO-18 diodes.

qumefox,

First off, I do not deal with optics,

Second off, I am building a prototype(as previously stated, do you know about mock-ups? probably not because you never have ENGINEERED ANYTHING that went to market, please learn how to read and then comprehend what it is that you are reading)

Third off, You do not know my business or line of work, so by you making that asinine statement I figure you to be of amateurish rank, surly not worthy or giving professional advice for ANY PROJECT.

Listen, I have over 34 years in my chosen profession working with NASA and other aerospace agencies as well as energy labs.

I am sorry if I do not need to buy diodes from you since it is apparently obvious that you are hurting financially to be selling them by piece meal and not by bulk like I always buy components. I know people are hurting in the economy but, if you need a loan go to a bank.

I only came here because I need to know some INFORMATION, not a sales pitch, and being that this is a laser forum, who would the top candidates be?

Notice that I asked for whitepapers, you should know what white papers are if not.you do not belong in this conversation, let alone handling lasers. If I had the specs I can go about my business and get them myself, not having to be accosted and half-hustled by some nobody selling diodes. I have enough vendors, ok?

I hated to put that to you the way I did putting you in your place and all, but you need to know NOW that I am not the one for the head long bulls#!t!

So you may exclude yourself from this particular thread for it does not apply to someone working from your 'know'ledge-base young man(hobbyist at best).

I cannot help it if I exude superiority in knowledge above you, it comes from experience and college degrees which by your blatant outburst you do not possess neither.

Here is a PROFESSIONAL tip for you, me.... yours turly a PROFESSIONAL SYSTEMS ENGINEER: GET GAINFULLY EMPLOYED BY GETTING HIGHLY EDUCATED!

Then get some drive and ambition and become something real instead of a piss poor wannabe forum God!

SysEng... he was trying to help you out. And he is an incredibly talented man, has a job, and does more than just work with lasers (you can see from his AWESOME Delorian in his profile picture). The point being... if you are working with diodes and you are doing something professionally, don't risk screwing it up by extracting and go out and buy something, especially from one of your "vendors."

Qume here is an incredibly reputable forum member and he knows what he is talking about - quite a bit more than you do. So insulting him and other forum members by just assuming you know better than all of us here (he is amongst the best of us), you won't get *any* help. Finally, this is not the place to just get information and leave. This is the place to learn and gradually figure out what you are doing. It's a hobbyist forum, and if you need professional advice for something professional in nature, contact Sony or whoever you got your writer from.

Your statement means absolutely nothing, and he was not helping me out by the egotistical statement he made. Plain and simply. I do not work with optics.

all I needed was what I asked for which was white papers or specs?

Not a half-a-hustleman, just SPECS, WHITE PAPERS.

I could care less what people own, I asked for simple information that apparently is not here.

A "hobbyist" forum, thank you I am in need of professional assistance with the optics in my project, that is all you had to say.

btw, please at your own leasuire look up the words

Professional

and

Hobbyist

you will be surprised by the differences.

last time so no one gets discombobulated...

I DO NOT WORK WITH OPTICS, I CAME HERE FOR SIMPLE PROFESSIONAL WHITE PAPERS, I did not know this was a hobbyist forum who knows maybe a professional optical physicist comes here and could have helped me. Could that be possible? Are there any on this forum?

Yes sir many harvests under my belt, read my sig:yh: No such thing as harvesting the "wrong" diode in my opinion, all laser diodes have some purpose/value.

I'm not here to argue so I'm staying out of this one.

By the pics you have uploaded, my best guess is that it is pretty much the same thing that I had posted a pic of. Here is a link to more info on that type of diode:http://laserpointerforums.com/f50/flat-red-laser-diode-testing-2nd-phase-47044.html

Best of luck to you and happy lasing:beer:

You think that we are all stupid, but we are all in fact incredibly bright people. The point being, qume was attempting to help you, by telling you that it will not be mountable in a normal Aixiz lens, nor will we know anything more about it until we get some information on your side including from where it came.

Regarding specs... generally speaking, if you extracted it from a driver, accessing the specs to that particular diode will be extraordinarily difficult to locate, due to the nature of companies not wanting to give away their edge to the competition. We use gathered data over the past years in order to estimate the "specs" of laser diodes that we extract from drivers, etc.

And yes, this is a hobbyist forum. Good luck with your professional assistance, I would like to see what this turns out to be (if it turns out to be anything).

People are trying to help you. Stop being condescending

Thank you Ramsey_Innovations, I love that name.
I appreciate the assistance, I am not too sure with egos floating around like qumefox this place is suitable for me a simple SysEng.

btw, I have many products in market circulation under mine, including some you get checked out with at medical hospitals as well as before you board your plane. go figure, but that is neither here nor there.

Very simple to have an educated conversation once egos are removed qumefox, you may learn something by getting IT out of the way!

You're the one without the ego? He didn't say anything about himself in his posts. He was just making educated guesses based off of your post and all of our previous experiences when it comes to new people on the forums.

You, on the other hand, proclaimed yourself the most educated and attempted to belittle a fellow member.

Even in this "peaceful" post above, you were condescending.

For someone so intelligent and educated, I'm surprised you didn't just use the search function to find that thread RI linked to in post# 26...

Or maybe you got to where you are in life by having others do for you. Whatever the case, no one owes you anything here so drop the attitude.

no more posts needed I came to the wrong place, I was better off with my first thought of going through IEEE, but I was buffalo'd by Google and insulted by a member asking a SIMPLE Q. So before I leave and renounce my membership here, let me get this straight.....

This is a 'HOBBYIST' laser forum, and everyone here is a 'self-proclaimed' laser expert w/ no certification or licensing?

i ask that only because i was just told this, but in order to handle such 'potentially' dangerously classed devices no one here is trained in the physics of the optics package(die) in a laser diode?

you mean you guys just get people here and they buy and handle lasers?

that is it? did I get it correctly(w/o offence) on a hobbyist level?

Now can someone please can direct me to the 'unsubscribe' option link please...I don't click links but this one I will happily with expectations of glee.

P.s.

Kevlar, there are things called 'production budgets' when you are on the macro scale. I am me,myself and will not change my set ways, makes the world we live in more interesting being individuals, too old, Thank God!
