If you remove from circuit board, just jam it onto a wall socket. Eventually, some pins will make their way into the plug and it will power up and open up a wormhole that leads straight to midnight on February 31 1922. Unless you're in America, in which case fatal injury may occur. Or if you're in California you'll get cancer.

I've been able to get some good sparks from 2 old oil filled ignition coils and a simple 555 driver circuit:

Those are around ~10cm long.
 
While there is some varainces (pressure, moisture, etc). A general rule of thumb is 10kv per cm. so for a 10cm long arc, you are probably in a rough ballpart of 100kv. (note this is the distance that the arc will breakdown the air and jump across, not how long you can stretch the arc once its established, current does that).

IMO, if you are looking for large arcs, focus less on the voltage and more on the amps, Ive been able to get over 2 feet with only 6kv (but with 500ma behind it :D)

Well. I guess a MOT is the way to go then? Not the safest of options though :p
 
Yes, at least with the ignition coil arcs, you can't (easily) kill yourself ;)
