Heat shrinking tubing

Hey,
I know some people use heat shrinking tube, so i thought to start this thread so beginners in the DIY like me and many others can safely use this great method of isolating the wires so they dont short-circuit and to keep our solders safe!

So im asking the great minds and hands of the DIY:
Whats the best way of shrinking the tubbing without damaging any component?? Especially the expensive LD!

Shrink tubing requires <200 degrees. It should pose no problem to the diode.

Hot air blower is the more common way, i suppose, or at least is the more common one that i use :p

Also big hot blowers (those used for scrap paint, high temperature), at middle position, are ok, cause it require just a second or two for shrink, so components don't get damaged.

In some emergency cases or field works, i use also lighter, but this require a bit of experience, for not damage things and do it in the right way.


Edit: if the time is not a problem and you're a patient person with steady hand, also just keeping the soldering iron near the tube (1 mm of distance from the tube), preferably under it (hot go up ;)), and moving it slowly, rolling the wire until all is retracted, is a working system.

I just use the tip of my soldering iron to shrink the tubing........rob
 
A Heat Blower for scraping paint may be too hot up close...
You can adjust the temperature of that Hot Air Blower by adjusting
the distance between the Blower and the heat shrink..

We use an adjustable Industrial Hot Air Blower by Master Appliance

because i bought the heat shrinking tube, but im not thinking in buying a hot air blower...ill try the hair drier first...if it doesnt work ill try the soldering iron method...and in last resource...hmmm...no i wont use fire
 
You will need a High Wattage Hair Blower and you will need to concentrate
the air flow to a small point with some type of metallic funnel.

I can only imagine how many little electrical parts will fly off your desk with a hair dryer. I'd stick with the soldering iron, since it's usually handy anyway.

Just put it near the heatshrink (don't touch it!) and the radiant heat will quickly start the heat shrinking.

We have a stand on our Heat Gun... and place it on the bench
facing towards the center of the shop... then manipulate the part
that needs heat shrinking into the hot air stream...:cool:

Same here. I like the soldering iron method because you can keep the heat away from the components instead of hitting the whole thing with a heat gun.
 
I use a lighter 99% of the time. Dont touch it with the flame, just hover the tube over the flame. It works fine if you go slow.
 
I think the soldering iron method is the easist & safest way to go................. rob
 
ill try the iron then first^^

i was thinking in something more 'aggressive' like TJ style of shrinking...

but ill just use the iron first
