Group Buy # 3 For Sony 16X DVD Burner Didoes

Greetings all,

SenKat, I have been watching this thread with fairly rabid interest over the course of the last couple of weeks and was curious as to whether or not there was still a quantity of these diodes available.

Also, has anybody here tried the power pulse driver circuit over at rmcybernetics? (sorry, can't post the link)

It's basically an all purpose PWM controller designed for a wide variety of applications and capable of switching up to something like 600 V.
I've posted a comment there to ascertain whether or not the controller would be suitable to drive these types of LDs and received a positive reply, that yes it will work however the drain pin of the transistor needs to be connected to a separate low voltage supply, or the voltage needs to be dropped through a resistor.

Just curious, and keep up the good work!

Hmm, I should start putting my circuit together. I was thinkin of using a 1W LED to test on, as it will suck as much current and voltage as possible, being rated slightly higher than the LD.

I'd recommend a red or amber luxeon star (or similar) led for that, the white ones need quite a bit higher voltages to work properly.

Make sure to double check if all well before you connect an LD though, those powerleds are a lot more rugged than laser diodes are... LEDs are mostly fried by excessive heat, but can withstand short bursts of high currents quite well.

Another good test bed are 3 1n4001 diodes in series, they give comparable voltage drop and a steep current/voltage response... but obviously lack the visible feedback ;)

I would also like to know if we can still order these, i just blew the one i pulled from a dvd burner. :(
I would be interested in getting 2 or 3.

Gazoo- Thanks, I had not seen that thread. Looks like I'll just have to try it and see, good thing I don't want to mount it inside a flashlight, I don't think that I would be able to effectively shrink the PWM controller.

ericab- Thank you, as well. Yes, that is the controller that I was referring to. Elsewhere on that site are schematics to build it yourself, which is what I'm planning on doing.

that thing is designed for running ignition coils, it will make a LD explode with the amount of power it will suply

I realise that the intended purpose of the rmcybernetics pulse controller is to drive larger voltage/amperage loads, however the parts values can be substituted to achieve the desired frequency range.

I was curious about driving LDs with it because I noticed that in the comments somebody had posted that they had had great success in driving LEDs, so I posted a question to the effect of "will this work to drive a laser diode at such and such a voltage and current?" the reply, from the designer of the driver, was something to the effect of "yes it will, however the transistor needs to either a)be conntected to a lower voltage source, or the voltage and current need to be dealt with after the signal is formed."

I was also intrigued by the prospect of being able to arrange several of the controllers in a master/slave fashion.

As it is, I'll end up building the rmcybernectics controller anyway, as my current setup of microwave oven capacitor, light dimmer and ignition coil just doesn't cut it any more...I need a higher frequency than what can be supplied by the dimmer switch, although it does make awfully fat arcs.

@SenKat, great news!  I'll very probably be ordering a few within the very near future.  Also, if I didn't mention this before, you are doing a wonderful service to the hobbyist public, especially in this day and age when things like education and understanding seem to be woefully absent from most peoples' lives.  You have my gratitude and respect. (for what it's worth :) )

oops, even with previewing it, I fudged that first sentence! :o

It should read:

"I realise that the intended purpose of the rmcybernetics pulse controller is to drive larger voltage/amperage loads at lower frequencies, however the parts values can be substituted to achieve the desired frequency range and voltage/amperage"

Forgive me, I've been up for almost 48 hours.

yea i have got some pretty big arcs of an ignition coil, but not using that driver. if he said it will work, then go ahead and make it! i agree SENKAT HAS DONE A GREAT JOB ON THIS GB!

Still no news on the diodes - the shipping info says "Due on Friday, August 24" So...MAYBE they meant this coming Friday ? I have called Fedex, and was only given "They are enroute at present" So....that is where I leave it for the moment !

G !

Now we all know. DON'T SHIP WITH FedEx!!! ;) arwell. absence makes the heart grow fonder, so they say... BUT i just cant wait. I've been asking ppl if i can have their old dvd burners to play with before my good LDs arrive. :'(
Hopefully not much longer! :D

Have you seen the arrow in the FedEx logo? Find it once and you;ll never forget it.
