GBW-H10N 4x Blu-Ray Burner... ?mA's?

Hi all,

I just bought a GBW-H10N sled from http://www.l@sersurplusparts.com/ (apparently he's not nice, cause my first post marked him "spammer... the @ is an "a"), and I will be getting it in the mail pretty soon. I know that the 405nm diode in this thing can put out ~150mW-175mW, but how many mA's I should put into it? Also, any information of the red diode would be nice! Thanks for the help!

That is what we call the 4X. You should limit the current to around 160mA. Like all violet diodes, you can push it harder, but the longevity suffers.

The red diode is the same long closed can diode that is in the 6X sled. 420mA is a good place for it. People run them as high as 480-500mA, but that is right on the edge. When you harvest it, make sure you remove the "plastic" film that is stuck to the front of the red diode. Sometimes this just falls off, but not always.

Peace,
dave

Yes, It says it was from a 4x burner on the website. The 4x must not be that much stronger than the PHR... I've seen and heard of people running the PHR up to 150mA...

THe red diode on the other hand sounds like an awesome bonus. Running that high, I'm sure it's able to burn stuff, right?

Since I tend to run my lasers for less than a 45 seconds per go, I think I'll run the 405nm diode at 165mA and the red diode at 440-450mA. Thanks for the info!

I strictly limit them to 150mA.

Does this give burning power?

I have a PHR803T set at only 50mW and when focused to a pinpoint with
an Aixiz acrylic lens... I can burn the wood on a clothes pin... :o

I have pushed the PHR up to 200mA.  However, they don't last at those currents.  In order for the PHR to last, the current should be limited to below 125mA.  This 4X is a nice "step up."  It can be run around 160mA.  The 6X seems to run nicely at around 200mA.  We MAY have a larger jump in power for the 8X, but the differences up to this point have been fairly regular.  Part of this difference may simply be that the "blu-ray" technology won (over HD DVD) and there is more work being done on it by more people now.

I can light a red match with 35mW of well-focused, violet laser light  ;)

Well, the efficiency for the PHR must also drop at such a high current. I imagine the extra 125mA to 200mA boost would only give you another 10-20mW, right?

I would have bought the 6x but LSP was sold out of them, and Charlie Bruce apparently couldn’t get a time or date of when the Chinese dealers would have the 6x sled again… I also didn’t want to risk the supposed “6x” sled that is going to be tested soon by Charlie Bruce.

And now I know where I went wrong with my first PHR diode… I couldn’t even burn a hole in a trashbag or feel any heat from the sucker `cause I didn’t have it focused perfectly. From now on, I’m going to pop on some sunglasses and point the beam at something black to get pinpoint focus. I can’t believe you lit a match at 35mW!

Thanks for the help again!

This is also pretty impressive. Again, I see my critical error… FOCUS! I will give it another go when I get my next batch of diodes.

At 200mA the PHR produced 190mW.  It lasted for several months.  Most PHR's won't last a day at 200mA

You can believe that 35mW can light a match

That match is red.  Using violet laser light, I can easily light pastel colored matches.

If you want to be able to focus your Blu-Ray's beam properly... you will need to use
Certified Laser Safety Goggles for that wavelength.... NOT sunglasses.... or the naked eye... :o

Lets just say I don’t have those/can’t afford those at the moment… is there any other alternative?

And if you are saying this because of safety, couldn’t I just run the laser at a low current until I have it focused, and then pump it up to burn stuff? This way, I wouldn’t be staring at a dangerous dot of violet light…

You will still be looking at the laser beam when you are burning "stuff"...

The safest way... without the proper Safety Goggles is to not use your laser... 8-)

How much do you think it would cost to replace your eyes....
or you may be looking to purchase a folding white cane instead... they cost
about the same price as a good pair of Safety Goggles...

The choice is yours............ ::)

Lets just say I don’t have those/can’t afford those at the moment… is there any other alternative? No. If you can afford the laser, you can afford the safety goggles. Especially if you're looking at 4x and 6x lasers, the goggles are likely cheaper than your laser, so no excuse.

And if you are saying this because of safety, couldn’t I just run the laser at a low current until I have it focused, and then pump it up to burn stuff? This way, I wouldn’t be staring at a dangerous dot of violet light… Sure, you can focus it using lower power, and then turn the power up. But then the power is still high when you're using it, and I don't see how you can burn anything without looking at the dot at some point during the burning process. Not to mention that reflections happen, and even a reflection from a 100mW laser can do real damage. Hey, they're your eyes, but no qualified person on this forum will tell you that you're safe without proper safety goggles, with "proper" in this case meaning tested and certified for use with lasers such that they meet or exceed the needs for your specific laser(s).

Get goggles! they really help when burning, though I found that I got the same degree of control when squinting carefully - your eyes are worth more than $30 (dragonlasers.com)... As for the 6X sleds, it's likely that the dealers simply steal a trayful of sleds off the production line as and when they fail a QC process. Since it's a random chance when they fail, and whether or not they will be able to steal them, we don't know when they will be able to get more (or if they will EVER get more!). That's why my buy failed, and they couldn't quote me a delivery time. The PHRs are more reliable because they came from the now-obsolete HD DVD drives, and would otherwise have been scrapped.
