GB laser barrels

Ok, initial quote for anodizing came back today and I'm looking at $6.95 per barrel.  That puts me way over budget for these.  So either they go out unanodized or the price increases.  the latter is not going to happen.  I'm looking for a cheaper means of anodizing these but it looks like these aren't going to be anodized.  Just wanted to give you guys a heads up.

This makes me mad cause the initial quote I got from the manufacturer in the first place was supposed to include the cost of anodizing. Now I find out that they don't do that in shop and have to outsource it. Well, lesson learned for batch 2.

This is bad news indeed. An unanodized laser barrel is not a good thing. Maybe you can get the anodizing company to lower the cost per barrel. After all, they don't get our business if we're not anodizing. Keep us updated on this.

anodizing is anodizing be it clear or black. as far as I'm aware most of the cost in the anodizing is incurred from the "masking" of the parts so they don't get anodized. I found out the clear didn't leave it gold it was the sonic bath they were using that tinted the metal gold not the anodizing.

Neither one... the first one you can easily get for less than that if you just buy a DVD burner on sale.

The second set of three have a CW output of only 90mw! Granted you should be able to push them a lot higher but you shorten the lifetime quite a bit.

which laser diode would you guys recommend me to get for this laser barrel, and whichever one it is, do you think that i will need to get more than one

Dont buy the first one. Not much reputation and lousy price anyway.

The second one is just the same diode SenKat is selling at $19.50 a piece shipped which is about the same price as that korean gearb guy which had some bad reviews here i hear.

So just get your red diodes from SenKat at under $20 a piece they are the Sony slvd1236vl 250mW pulsed diodes and quite a proven workhorse here.

Anodizing makes the aluminum much more durable and it will look much better and not get so dirty or scar and also slightly insulating. It will also be harder so making the threads much more durable. Anodizing also can get whatever dyes or color you want to stick better without chipping or peeling or fading from UV radiation. It will also look nicer. An unanodized aluminum barrel will be much more prone to wear and corrosion.

Frankly, I am not keen on having an unanodized barrel as I was going to make a laser from this for keeps.

what is CW mean

and what does pulsed mean

CW= continuous wave = constant on
pulsed = well pulsed seems rather self explanatory = on_off_on_off... as some frequency and pulse width.

so would a pulsed one even be able to pop balloons and stuff like that because it is constantly turning off

well you have to make a pulsed driver circuit to make it run that way. it only means the pulse peak is rated for 250mW but the time average power would be less than that depending on the off duration.

The driver that comes with this barrel runs the diode CW and not pulsed.

You should be able to pop balloons and stuff both ways. maybe you can ablate better with a 250mw pulsed. 250mW pulsed would pop faster since it has more punching power. Its like punching vs pushing. But really no point putting in all that effort into pulsing unless you are using the laser for technical purposes.

You should be able to get 130mW-180mW CW with sufficient diode lifespan with the sony diode. Even less than that is good to go for popping and burning and matchlighting.

so if i bought one of the ones form SenKat, i could just put in in this barrel, i dont really get what you are saying the driver circuit

You will need to solder the diode to the driver, which controls the amount of current being fed through the diode.
Read around the forums.
If you're not up for this, you can just buy a premade Dorcy from Kenom @his sig. I hear the are pretty good.
