Re: GB feeler - $5 universal TINY Laser diode driv

Count me out as a shipping hub - someone else will have to do it for you, Blue.

Re: GB feeler - $5 universal TINY Laser diode driv

Re the width, there is about 2mm of spare edge, added for the specific purpose of filing down for fitting in smaller cases :P

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

I still don't see the benefit of using a LDO regulator for current if all you're after is the current control...

For a small hobby idea, it's great to use the LM317... but for a professionally printed board, there are much more efficient designs and will not ever exceed 0.7V drop. Have you looked into making a real circuit that can drop 0.2V?

Not to mention the cost of the regulator alone is about $2, and with other discrete designs, the parts for the whole driver would cost less than the cost for one regulator... :-?

GL either way;

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

yh DDL. after seeing that it requires a 1.2v drop i took it out of my wishlist, i would rather get the amc7135 and put a resistor in series to drop the voltage or use the lm317

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

um. daedal, the regulator I'm using is $0.37 btw :P not $2.
and i, and drlava, have spent a great deal of time (and me, money) desiging this. I did enquire about having theme made externally by a company. Even for an equivalent one such as this they were gonna charge us $8.50 per piece. For 0.6v drop it was more like $13.40.
See where I'm going?
I tried to get a blend of cheap, small and effective i.e. low v drop.
A LM317 circuit has a v drop of AT LEAST 1.7V. Often more. So at least it's one up on that.
and izzy007 its only 1V drop not 1.2 :P

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

So technically, all I would need to do is place my diode in a module, solder the diode to the board, stick it in kenoms pointer barrel, throw in some AAA batteries, and this would be a working laser?

I am not very good with these boards etc, so if someone could explain this to me I would probably be buying some, ;)

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

Rob, I think the barrels come with the boards.

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

they do. and they are setup for cr123's not AA's or AAA's barrelwise anyway.
you can use these with other voltage's tho si it's not just good for the cr123's

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

True that, these come with the barrels. But some people want them separately.
Also, kenom's barrel doesn't need a module. the diode press fits right into the head.

Considering senkat's stonetek site sells an lm317 non-assembled kit for $15, this is an excellent deal, as it offers better performance at a lower cost, and it's assembled to boot. This is a real circuit, simple, and adjustable with two selectable ranges. The point of this driver is to enable efficient regulation of a Blu-ray laser with 6V (2 CR123), which it achieves, while at the same time working well for red and dpss lasers.

Perhaps the next rev. will use a transistor/opamp driven design, but you can't deny the deal here.

2 for me!

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

Maybe I sounded too harsh... sorry... :-[

I didn't mean it like that... I am just saying that since it is going to be SMD parts, why not make it a proper CCS? The design is simple enough and with an SMD it would be the same size and would cost the same :)

Please understand that I am not putting this down at all. The deal IS phenomenal, and I never said anything about it. I'm just simply suggesting. :-?

Hey, that makes sense, thanks for the post. I guess the answer to that is.. time. the lm317 variant is a proven design and simple to modify for use in the KenTorches. Since it's already being produced for them, Blue figured why not let others take advantage of the low cost of the printed boards since the price is already low because of the volume. Down the road, who knows what other great things are in store :)

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

CCS is...?
Other thing is, Daedal, I am assembling them and I don't like SMT things cos they are fiddly :P
In the future, I could enquire about assembly onsite, perhaps you and I could collaborate to do something like that in future!

Re: GB feeler - Tiny LD driver $5, 2 for $8.50 shi

im in for at least 2, maybe more
