I have been researching and in some cases 2x CR123a batteries can be used in some hosts instead of 1x 18650.

My question is, if I pick up 2x CR123a 3v batteries, will the combined 6v be too much for the flexdrive? I read data sheets on flexdrive-v5 (I'm asuming that's what my new "toy" is using) and the spec maxes at 5.5v. I also found that a diode or resistor can be used to rectify or drop the voltage to safe operating spec. Anyone familliar with this flexdrive setup to give me an answer wether 2x CR123a would fry the driver without making additional modifications?

Thanks!

Do not use 2 x CR123s or 16340s in this laser! As you've said above the flexdrive cannot handle that much voltage, you'll fry the driver & that'll be one less flexdrive the world shall know of.

Edit: Blord is also correct, missed his warning before replying :p

Thanks for your input guys!

I was reading the specs to check into options before doing anything stupid that could potentially damage my awesome new pretty device. I just wanted to check in and see if a diode had already been added to the flexdrive or explore other options since you guys know your stuff.

Looks like a single CR123a and spacer that's about 33mm is the best quick option. Not it's just a matter of either finding a spacer or trying a quick DIY project so I can use it tonight. Going to an outdoor party and want to be able to do some sky beemshots :)

You guys rock!

Phew! im glad you didnt try the 2 - 123As. That would have been a short story for sure, haha.

If you can get the right spacer that wont short out on the host, and make sure it wont (because then you could potentially turn that beautiful unit into a pipe-bomb), then i wouldnt see a problem with using one cr123a battery in the unit.
It would probably make the output less because i think they batts are only rated for 3volts. But that should be plenty to get a nice solid beam out of the unit.

Oh, you should also look at getting the LensPen Micro Pro. It makes it nice to keep the lens clean so you dont burn any debris on the lens itself. I had to cut down my lens pen to fit into the aperture though which wasnt an easy process.

Cheers! Tyler

Ok, Im getting really impatient while waiting for my 18650s to come from China. I looked around locally and can't seem to find anywhere that has 18650s 3.7v in stock (I called a lot of places today). I heard these leave black on the lens, I use a microfiber lens cleaning cloth...

Nope! Not if you brush the carbon off after you use the cleaning tip one last time. In this order: Brush, clean, brush.

I ordered mine from CPF Marketplace (A flashlight forum)

AW IMR 16340s and 18650s from a guy reshipping from Florida, so you need not wait the long times from China, especially nearing the Chinese New Year. I got them in like 4 business days.

AW Li-Ion & IMR Batteries Sales Thread *USA* & international. ***Part 2***

Lol. they might hit Atlanta in 2 days.

We have a member that stocks batteries, here in the states... I ordered from lighthound also... They arrived in 4 days...

Thanks again for everyone's input. It's great to see so many in the community being active and helpful! I ended up stopping by a place on Friday, unironically called "Batteries Plus", that had a fully charged 18650 in stock. I know I got ripped off a little by paying $19USD for a 1500mah cell, but it's a price I was willing to pay for the convenience of having it that night. I was able to bring out my "new toy" from Kart at the event and it made a great impact while shining it at a safe distance above the heads of the other attendees!

This truly is a great unit and I got a great deal from Kart! The transaction was perfect and has exceeded my expectations. It really is a fine piece of craftsmanship! I managed to grab some beamshots by the pool the other night:

Also, + for Kartracer00 for the great smooth transaction! Great, friendly and helpful communication the whole way though. It's a prime example of an excellent community member!

Also, Kart... now that I've used this host for a bit, it's really growing on me. Very sleak and also very solidly built! I'm actually thinking of working on a test build on another using this sh-032 host. The thought has also come to mind to buy a bunch of hosts, grab heatsinks, drivers, lenses, and colored tailcaps in bulk (5 or so of each) and start on a build of each color in the spectrum at around the same spec/power level of 500-600mw.

You said there was a flexdrive v5 in it? An M140 Diode? and what kind of lense does it have in it? (Maybe a question for Danefex, actually) I'm also wondering if there is a replacement LED for UV/Blackight that will drop into one of the sh-032 hosts so I can bring blacklight to parties and charge lantersmith rope.

Yeah, I think I'm already getting addicted and you started it! lol :thanks:

You are correct about the flexdrive and M140 diode and I believe that laser has a 3 element lens. Unless Kart replaced it with a 405-G lens, it's probably a 3 element. You can tell by looking at the barrel of the lens, a 405-G lens is brass in color and a 3 element is almost black. (looks silver in this pic, dont be fooled)

Yep, its a 3-element lens. Thanks Dan! Totally forgot to check this thread every day. Ill be on it more. And boldar! i saw you bought a krypton! Congrats. Looks like you got it for a steal and a half.

Yeah, I picked up the WL 300+mw Krypton from JLM, and it was a steal, since he needed the cash. I can totally identify since I have a SallieMae loan I'll be paying on for a long time to come :)

I'm trying to get everything figured out on the 445 I got from you because I want to build a 405 violet and a 638 red as my first builds. Going to be using the same host for them too :) I may actually pick up a G-1 for the on I got from you as well!
