Update: Press fit heatsink design option...

For a $5 dollar upgrade charge, I can make the heatsinks threaded for AixiZ threads, and have a press fit design for the diode. (copper or aluminum)

In this case, the heatsink will be a little shorter. (length of an AixiZ module)

But it would still be a better design I believe for better heatsinking. It's basically just a large module that fits the host...



I will still offer both styles, because the normal design (for using an AixiZ module), still may be desirable. Especially if you will be using an EzFocus adapter. Being able to move the module position aids in getting the perfect position of the EzFocus adapter in relation the the host. This allows the use of different lenses using the EzFocus adapter. (being able to adjust module position)

I like that. Any idea how many times the diode can be replaced before the metal wears out?

I do not, but copper is fairly soft, and it would be really easy to use a small tipped punch, and tap a couple of divots near the edge of the hole that the diode presses into, and this would make the fit tighter. So that you could press the diode in tighter... :)

Dr_Evil, just to let you know that I sent your 18650 'Hot' option kits and 405-G-1 glass lens today. (Monday)

Red kit: (normal heatsink)
V5 FlexDrive set at 380mA's

445 kit:
Copper press fit heatsink, Micro BoostDrive set at 500mA's

I have them marked.

Jay , How much for one of those heatsinks? I'd like to upgrade my kit to one of those.

Normal style copper heatsinks are $32...

And I charge a $5 dollar upgrade for the press fit design because they are considerably more labor intensive even though I don't have to put a set screw in them...

So it would be $37 plus $3 dollars shipping for the press fit copper heatsink...

But honestly, your copper heatsink is plenty good man!

Remember, the press fit ones are a little shorter length. I really don't know which one is actually better. I guess probably the press fit one is though...

HumanSymphony, I made your kit in one of my DIY Green hosts per our conversation since I am waiting on supply of the 18650 hosts...

The DIY Green host is the exact same build. In fact, the head, and tail cap are interchangeable. The only difference is the design of the outer barrel...

The only other difference, is that the DIY Green host that I use does not have a round board for the driver. But I put one on yours.

In fact, I soldered on lead wires for you... :)

I got the package today. The red is finished. It peaked at 231mW and settled around 225. I'll post some pictures in the topic I create specifically for my pictures/videos once I have the 445 done. I'm going to be gone a few days and hope to have the 445 diodes waiting for me.

I think I'm going to have to build use another one of these kits for the green module I have. The only problem is the driver was removed. The module came from the leadlight that dr lava modded.

Well, for a green build in this host, you won't need the driver anyway...

But you will need the pill. That is where I would put an extra set screw for the module positive contact point...

sem020106, at 850mA's for your 445 build, you will want to make sure you have the highest quality 18650 battery to handle the current draw.

I recommend AW brand. You can get them at lighthound.com






If anybody is not yet aware of this option (sem020106's build), here's the information. (noted in the first post now)


445 Build:

The 18650 host (and/or DIY Green host) can fit a larger heatsink if desired, by drilling out the top of the pill and mounting the driver inside the pill like with my Pocket Mini kits. Then the heatsink can be longer yet.

In the original design, I just didn't think it was really necessary to have the heatsink larger.

But if your planning on a 445 build with an AixiZ 405 glass lens, then you will want this option...

Because since the lens sticks out farther than other lenses, you can have room inside to position your module farther back into the heatsink to get your focus ring near flush with the heatsink for a better look. (and especially if you plan on using my EzFocus adapter)

Let me know when you order, and I can set it up that way for an extra $10 bucks... (but it will not have the press fit design option in this case)

I just realized that I hadn't posted back here after my kit arrived and I finished the build.

Everything went smoothly and the laser works as expected. jayrob set mine at 400mA with the MicroBoost but I've no idea what the power output actually is. I can say that, when focused, the beam causes EVERYTHING to start smoking instantly and catch fire a split second later.

I'd say I've got about 30 or 40 minutes of run time on it so far, about 15-20 seconds at a time, maybe one or two runs up to a minute.

I ordered a nice microphone stand from Amazon to hold the pointer steady so that I can aim it at something further away than a foot and still get it focused to a point.

There's really only one complaint that I have about the entire thing: the spring in the battery compartment was WAY too long.

I'm not sure why this isn't noted in the directions that came with it (particularly considering that I've got the same battery pictured in the guide) but there is no way that any 18650 cell would fit in mine without trimming the spring because the bottom wouldn't even screw on all the way until I cut it back by about 1cm. This particular problem also causes the driver & wires start to twist if you haven't trimmed it far enough. Without attention, at some point they'll pop loose and you'd have to resolder them (assuming it doesn't short and fry the diode or driver). It's not a gigantic issue since the 18650 has a massive run time, but for someone who pays less attention than I do, they might end up killing it pretty quickly.

Hmmm... that's strange. I test my 'Hot' option kits with battery installed all the time and never found that to be an issue??

Oh well, guess it was an easy fix huh?

Set at 777mA's! :) Use a high quality battery at this current. Like an AW brand battery...

I am definately going to need one of these kit eventually to build my 445nm.

I am going to hold off for now Jay (buying too many lasers)... but soon enough... I will buy one! :yh:

Jayrob, I have just received my c6 hosts. I bought the ones without circuit and led inside : DealExtreme: $10.90 C6 DIY Cree LED Flashlight Full Casing/Shell with Driver Pill (2*CR123A/1*18650)

But I don't understand, how can i use it if there is no surface for the + of the battery to touch? I mean, the spring is ok( for the - of the battery) but what about the + ? I'll be using a flexdrive and this will be a 445 nm build. Can you give me a hand ?
