Once again it turns out i might have been too conservative with the expected powers..
A PHR-803T diode can reach 117mW at only 90mA with a Meredith lens, as shown by Jayrob in his awesome MXDL builds! He mentioned a 30% increase before, but i never imagined this! It's almost 50% more!  :o

This means that overdriving will NOT be necessary to reach >100mW with the 405nm AR coated glass lenses.. Even 90mA will have an amazing power, never mind 98mA..

This is great! I've never been this excited in my life! ;D Can't wait to get the custom lenses.
It would be amazing to reach that kind of power safely.. Even more amazing if the 405nm coating could increase it a bit.

Cross your fingers and hope for the best! Some prayers might be in order as well.. :)

Igor, I hope your special coated glass lenses put out even more than the Meredith glass lenses with the blu-rays!

But I would like to point out, that I believe the reason for the Meredith glass increase in power, is mostly due to the 'short focus' design of the lens. The Meredith glass lens must be positioned very close to the LD in order to get focus. Because of this, more light goes into the lens. (before it has a chance to 'fan out' inside the module)

The trade off, is that it doesn't focus 'super tight' like the acrylic lenses. (which are not as 'short focus' in design)

Anyway, looking forward to your special lenses. Keep up the great work there! I need to try to get one from you for comparisons.:)
Jay

Edit: Schweet! :D Because of your testing the different lens coatings and stuff, it got me testing my 2 X build. It has a Meredith acrylic lens.

I have it set at 110mA's.
With the Meredith acrylic lens (which is AR coated), I only get 63.2mW's.
But since the lens size is the same as the clear, non-coated AixiZ acrylic lens (after removing it from the black plastic), I put an AixiZ acrylic lens into the Meredith module....
Just by swapping lenses, it now reads 94.9mW! :)

Very interesting how much differences there are between lenses with the blu-rays... With the high power reds, these two acrylic lenses will give you very close to the same power.

Re: FS: >80mW Blu-Rays, two models: $185

Actually, i just hope, they get close to that. They don't have to be better, because that is an incredible increase. I did not know there is this much power BEHIND the lens. I made a mistake in my calculations, and your high power builds made me realize that.

BTW, i think there are differences even between the same type of lens, never mind different ones..
The main problem is in the plastic alone. the 650nm AR coating is actually the smaller part of the problem.

A triple glass lens with six 650nm AR coatings will still let more 405nm light through, than a plastic lens with two coatings.... There are some transmittance curves, Phenol posted in the PHR-803T thread, that show the problem of 405nm light and plastic materials. That's why it pays to go with good optics for this wavelength.

Anyway, awesome work, Jayrob! You reached a high power with quality, instead of overdriving!

Now that's what i can respect and recommend!

So do you think I would be better off using my coated aixis glass lens or the DX acrylic non coated ones?

Re: FS: >80mW Blu-Rays, two models: $185

For now, you're definitely better off using the clear acrylic lens.

I did some measurements a while ago at 90mA...
~ 70mW with a clear acrylic
- 62mW with the AR coated triple element glass AixiZ lens
- 40mW with an AR coated acrylic lens

The three elements in the AixiZ glass lens, each with two coatings block more 405nm light, than a clear acrylic lens.

The clear acrylic is the best low cost solution for now.

BTW, i made a mistake when measuring the no-optics power the first time, so i thought it's only 80mW. I thought the 650nm AR coated acrylic halves it. But in reality, there is over 120mW of power behind the lens! This means a 650nm AR coated acrylic takes away more than 2/3!

This is why i was so shocked by Jayrob's results.. I didn't know there even was so much power coming from the diode, so my calculations were very conservative. This is why good optics are important with Blu Rays. Much more so, than with reds. Otherwise, you're just wasting the diode to lose most power in the lens.

Re: FS: >80mW Blu-Rays, two models: GONE!

Everything seems perfect Igor !!!

I am waiting patinetly for my laser ! ;)

Re: FS: >80mW Blu-Rays, two models: GONE!

Wow, 120mw.So with the special BR lences it would be 120mw @ 96,5ma?

Re: FS: >80mW Blu-Rays, two models: GONE!

Me too, but honesty, I am not very patient, I want that thing NOW! ;D
At first I was expecting a 70mw blu-ray, now he says that we can get >110mw out of them. So Schweet! :D

Well, i can not tell that for sure yet. All i know is that plastic is bad for 405nm, and that 650nm AR coatings are bad.. 120mW should be possible with the glass lenses, but i don't know at what current yet.

There is no way to say exactly what power it will be after the custom lens. I do NOT want to guess about it.
But it is looking very good, because there is much more light behind the lens, than i expected.

As i said, i will buy the lenses at my own risk. Only after i measure them and tell you guys what to expect, can you decide if you want them or not.

Well, LazerGuy, please answer my email! :)

About the powers...

Well, we will definitelly be able to reach >100mW without changing the current. 110mW should also be possible. Hopefully more. We COULD reach much more than that, if the lens comes out just right, but i don't know how much yet. All i know is that the diode is much more powerful, than expected, and that the plastic blocks the light. I am hoping for the best, but until i get the transmittance curves, i won't know for sure. And even then there are other factors..

This is what it's supposed to be like:
- The focal length will be much shorter than with acrylic lenses - the lens will be closer to the diode and collect more light, the beam will be tighter and brighter
- The numerical aperture is almost double that of an acrylic - almost the entire back surface will be effective, it can collect more light coming from the diode
- Glass will let more 405nm through than plastic, 405nm AR coating will improve this even further

All of these factors have to be just right! I am trying to be very careful with the specs for the lenses, otherwise something can go wrong, and i will be left with $750 - $900 in useless lenses.

So please, calm down, do not speculate too much just yet. I am way more nervous about it, than all of you together. I am hoping for the best of course. Otherwise, i would not be risking this kind of money.

No, not yet. The second batch will be done after the first, i'm afraid... That's how it usually works.. :)

Luckily, the second will go faster, so i will be able to do it soon.

Ops,I thought the first batch was already shipped.

Re: FS: >80mW Blu-Rays, two models: GONE!

No, i start shipping out this week. The second batch, next week...

I was waiting on various stuff. Most of it was ordered with EMS express, but it still took a long time...
And there is a lot more still on the way. Express mail arriving to Slovenia usually means, that it comes here very fast, but then it spends the same amount of time at the customs.. ::)

And i had to make many small orders, because if i make a big one, the customs tell me, that i can't import it personally, but only on my company.

It's frustrating really.

Re: FS: >80mW Blu-Rays, two models: GONE!

Hello Pal! They washers are on the way, but I sc***d-up, the shipping and customs stuff is killer expensive! But at least there will be plenty of great heat sink washers, it is hard to beat aluminum for this use! Maybe if 660 is more than you can use you can sell some. Thanks in advance as I will so love that laser!

Re: FS: >80mW Blu-Rays, two models: GONE!

Yeah, i read the PMs.. That IS expensive.. The express shipping alone is more than i first thought it would all cost. I just hope i have some money left in the end. :(

But it's good they are on the way, because i can only make so many heat sinks with what i have here. They are coming out very good tho.. The heatsink is in two large parts, that screw together and touch in the middle.

It covers the entire module and sucks heat away where it is needed the most.

Thanks again, Glenn!

Re: FS: >80mW Blu-Rays, two models: GONE!

These lenses are going to be phenomenal! If you aren't lucky enough to get IgorT's build, you are sure to want one or more lens that he is getting!
