You normally don't need to worry much about voltage, the diode will draw what it needs (2.2V) and the driver will take whatever it needs (usually like 1-2V). I'd start out trying to supply your little driver with 3V (like two AA's) and that will probably work. Undervoltage would be a good mistake as it won't kill it. Overvoltage could though.
