Not sure if you will, but could you hold that set for me?  I am at work and don't like doing transactions here due to security reasons, but I would really like to get a set of these to aid in my practice in building.
I am good for it, just ask Jay.  I promise you I will send the payment tonight when I get home (about 12 hours from now).
I would really appreciate it!  :)

You've got 'em.

Peace,
dave

Re: FS:  635nm 5mW Diodes

Great!  Thank you so much.  :)

Now just out of curiosity, these diodes should run just fine from a 5mW 650nm red diode driver right?   I have a few of these lying around from a few DX modules I took apart.   I am not sure what mA they are running, but voltage wise should be the same?

If not I have a rckstr to play around with. These will make great practice builds/solders.

I've never measured the current on one of those drivers, so I cannot say.

They are fun and "cheap" to experiment with AND you usually end up with some pretty bright "red" pointers in the end ;)

Peace,
dave

Another quick question, the rkcstr test load, can I use that to test the mA output on any driver, or just the rkcstr drivers?

Any driver. The test load just simulates the load that the diode will give the driver.

Peace,
dave

I'm not too sure, but I did in fact try using the cheap drivers from the red DX modules (the focusable dot ones), and I couldn't get it to work no matter what pin combination i did. I then used that same diode on an LM317 build (DDL) and got it to work fine.

BTW: Thanks Dave, just got my second set today. Nice, smooth transaction as always :)

I am going to test the current on one of those DX drivers when I am at work tomorrow. I'm suspecting they are pushing less than 10mA, which would explain why they wouldn't work with these diodes.

BTW Dave, payment sent. Thanks again for holding.

Alright sorry for the double post, and being kind of off topic here (didn't want to make a new thread for this) but I just tested one of those DX drivers and the little thing is putting out 110mA with a 3.91V source (single lithium rechargeable).

I wasn't expecting that, why is it so high? Especially when its only pushing 5mW or less out of the red diode it was attached to?

If I am not mistaken, shouldn't I be able to drive a PHR with this driver? (given the right input voltage that is). Or do you think the driver is only capable of putting out a fixed voltage and not 'boosting' it to meet the demands of a higher voltage diode?

I am really tempted to hook this up to one of my PHR's... but I don't want to risk it if somebody could tell me why that would be a bad idea.

I think it is very unlikely that DX lasers have boost drivers, as they are considerably more complex=expensive than buck drivers. In fact, how sure are you that they are really using a constant-current source instead of let's say just a series resistor? (A flashlight I bought from DX was advertised as having a "fully digital regulated circuit". Apart from the LED and switch, it didn't have any components. So if you remember that digitus (lat.)=finger, they're absolutely right... you use your finger to switch it on & off.) You can test that by varying the input voltage, and the resistance/voltage drop over the output. The current should stay the same.

A little further testing on these shows they can push a ~5v violet diode. At 8.24volts from two lithiums and using the rkcstr test load setting to BLU, it started at 186mA and dropped to a steady 171mA as it warmed up. And lowering the volts considerably lowers the mA's. With 6.06volts it was doing 132mA.

So I have no idea if these are considered boost drivers (I'm not sure what a boost driver really means) but based on my testing with the rkcstr test load, it seems they would work for higher power violet diodes, like a 6x or even 4x, which would be a pretty good current at 171mA with two fully charged lithiums (at least as much as I can charge them, at a full 8.4v its probably a steady 180mA).

I made a thread about these in the violet laser section a few days ago...but nobody has replied. Either because everybody already knows they won't work, or just nobody cares. But this is interesting to me, and I would like to know more about why these would or wouldn't work for a violet diode. I haven't yet tested it with a PHR, and I would like to avoid doing so if this has been tested already. I only have a few of these right now...don't want to destroy them just yet.

It is also possible that no one responded because no one had any input for you.  I believe that you are the only one doing this work.  As long as it interests you continue AND continue to post your findings.  It may spark someone else's learning or bug for research.

Pretty soon you'll be torturing 6X and 8X diodes just to force them to reveal their secrets   [smiley=evil.gif]

Who knows? You may be the first one to "kill" a 12X diode ;)

Peace,
dave

Re: FS:  635nm 5mW Diodes (SOLD OUT)

Hello Dave,
I have received the 635nm’s in the mail today.
Packaging and diodes look great. Can’t wait to try them out.
Thanks,
Peng
