Focusing Laser Host Deal

Hi Rob,
this is related to the host and not to the lens right?
Because I'll build a BR laser with this host and I'll us a 405-G-1 lens. So what you told kinda worried me.

well, the lens doesn't go close enough to the diode, so the laser can focus close up, but not far away.

The way to solve it, is to not screw the diode holder fully in, and glue it part-way. Also, you may need to saw some of the holder off as well, to allow the lens to get closer. I'll post pics soon if you want

Rob

Yeah that would be really helpfull. Thanks a lot. I am looking forward to seeing the pics.

I was wrong about Royal Air Mail being slow. I received my package today, in California.
Everything looks good so far :) I'm gonna put the red diode in later tonight and will report back.

I should have known better with my last transaction using Royal Air. I bought off a newbie that ended up only shipping half of my order, and it took almost 40 days to get here. My apologies for the slow comment.

Edit: I put it together using the red diode that was included, and a Rkcstr driver set at 420mA. Focusing it to infinity took a couple of minutes set it up right, but that's all. The only issue I came across was the focusing spring seemed to get in the path of the beam a little bit. It's an easy adjustment, but I may just use some teflon tape and do away with it altogether.
A spring for the driver would have been nice too, but no big deal. I like the end results for the price.

robjdixon, thanks for the hint about how to get the focus correct. Looking forward to the build pics.

I am still waiting for mine to arrive. It must take longer to get it on the east coast.

^^ When yours arrives, it will have a detailed pic of where to modify the diode mount. The diagrams shown above show a spacer ring used for a blu ray setup, but it isn't included.

Oh yeah, spacer's not included?
The detailed pic shows the modification wich rob talked about or is it something else?

It shows the blu ray modification... where to trim the mount, the lens spacer, etc.

I have updated the link to the last picture in the first post. It is now the same as the sheet I'm sending out with the kits and shows where I cut away the diode mount as an alternative to the spacer ring for the BR Laser.
In my BR build I found that the lens needed to be able to travel ~2mm closer to the diode than the host allowed without modification.

Once I have cut the diode housing, will I have to screw it halfway like Rob said or can I just fully screw it?
Cuting the housing will be very hard for me btw since i don't have a lathe.

you don't have to cut anything if you don't want to. Just get a dab of super glue around the top most thread of the lens and then screw the lens into the focus ring but only screw it in one turn. Just barely enough to be held in. Worked for two of my builds.

Anyone know the dimensions of a spacer that would fit perfectly in the place needed without any need for any of these adjustments? Not that the workarounds aren't good enough.

EDIT: I found the solution to my problem.
BTW, I just wanted to say that I received my stuff and it's all really good. Thanks Odic.

Received my hosts today too. Thanks! I like how the focus works on these.
