Focal length of AixiZ acrylic lens?

[quote author=wannaburn link=1211450630/0#10 date=1223423255]To get a smaller beam in what I have tried is to find a smaller lens that sits just as close to the diode as the acrylic axiz. The smaller the diameter of the lens translates into a smaller diameter beam.

Erm, getting a smaller lens would mean that you're focusing less of the light coming out from the diode.

Not if the smaller lens have smaller Fl and is tighter to the LD. 8-) Like i understand...

ThorLabs also has one with a focal length under 2mm w/ 400 nm coating.

I have also been looking for some short focal length lenses, preferably with AR for 400nm.

Here is one by LightPath for 405nm lasers with a focal length of 4 mm and working distance to the diode of 2.39 mm.

Add (www) to above. Can't post a link yet.

Hmm... Very interesting...

Has anyone tried these short FL lenses? Might try to get some to replace the aixiz modules..

I have tested the short focal lenght lenses from lg22x sled and the beam diameter is realy small but its alot of scatter around the dot and a very dirty beam at all. and iam not able to center the lens correctly i dont know why?

I have ordered 2 of these Lightpath ar coated acspheric lenses.

f=3.1 mm, 0.68 NA, Unmounted Geltech Aspheric Lens, AR: 400-600 nm

Its realy expensive but i like to have a small clear BR beam without scatter around the dot.
The plan is to put them in aixis lens nut someways.
Use maybe without the adjustment ring, because it has to screwd deep in to use this short focal lenght.

just want to use the time till Igor rule the world with the output optimized ones.

ARGH!!! $82!!! I too am in search of a Lens that will fit a standard AixiZ module. only because i notices that commercially made lasers have a really nice tight beam and my beam using a glass AixiZ lens is around 4-6mm. i want a beam more in the range of 2-3mm. what about surplus shed... anyone looked there?

HV;

Surplus Shed has some suitable lens assemblies,
but they are more expensive and hard to fit to laser diodes:

Surplus Shed 405nm lens

It has a F.L. of 6.5mm which would give a larger beam diameter.

A machined aspheric AR coated lens with short F.L. is also fairly expensive,
but it threads right into an Axiz module and smaller beam diameter.

I also have the bare lenses available.

Thanks for the reply... unfortunatly $80 is a little out of my price range... especially to spend on a 80mW, 650nm lol. i was thinking more along the lines of $10-25 maybe slightly unrealistic figures?

i dont need a lens at the moment anyway, just this second blew my last laser 80mW red... doesn't matter too much as i have 50 arriving within the next couple of days :D

The best ~$10 lens for Red diodes, is the Aixiz glass lens.

The three elements & longer F.L. cost you about 15% in power,
but it is a decent comprimise.

Ok, so according to the posts in this thread that look to be from people who actually know what they are talking about, smaller focal length lenses = tighter beam and more power, but at a cost of being harder to focus. what about divergence though? does the tighter beam diameter in this case increase the divergence like it would if you ran the beam backwards through a beam expander?

Also, it seems the objective lens from drives has a small focal length, but according to posts, the beam is "dirty" from a lot of side splash? is this caused by poor mounting? or simply a problem with the lens not being designed for collimation? Quite curious on this subject, and thinking of experimenting with the objective lens from a 8x LG drive. (haven't looked by I assume it's some sort of AR coated glass)

EDIT: if small focal length aspheric AR lenses are harder to find and more expensive, but CAN achieve a thinner beam with more power, surely someone has found a supplier? can anyone point me at one?

The ones i took out from the plastic holder are 6mm from the "flat" (less round is more correct) side, that is the one that go in the LD direction .....

i am currently using the AixiZ glass lenses that sell on ebay for $5 each... the only other AixiZ lens i have seen for sale is an 405nm AR coated lens (might get one for my blu-ray diode when it arrives). but they are $15. i really want a tighter beam like the ones from commercial lasers, someone must know where to get such an optic as a good price!!!

The Aixiz BR lens was dissapointing.

I have the short F.L. AR lens alone for $29.95.

It can be mounted in the Aixiz housing you currently have.

See the link in my signature for more info.

ok, scrap the blu-ray lens then... i dont mind lol standard glass ones are 1 3rd of the price :-D.

to be honest, i'm not really sure i want to spend another $30 on a 80mW red lol. i might consider it for my first BR diode when it arrives.. even that is only 100mW though.

what is this the diameter of a collimated beam on your lens Vs glass AixiZ lens?

can i ask where you get your laser diodes from? so far all mine have been from ebay, but they lie about the power output. they always say 350mW laser.... you google the part number and its like 100mW CW and 350mW pulsed.... i hate liars!

The beam diameter is hard to measure accurately,
but I would estimate a quality AR short FL lens to have about 60% of the beam width,
compared to a cheap lens assembly.

Several people on this board are very good sources for diodes..

Modwerx, HighTech Dealz, Scopeguy20 are all good sources.

Ebay sources are suspect at best.
