First build: Survival Lasers 650nm






Hazer, I built a M-140 from DTR and a 1.5 amp host kit from Survival. As tested on my Laserbee it is 1.48 Mw. My only wish is that the beam divergence was tighter. It is not bad but I wish it was smaller.

My 500Mw 638nm from DTR, and a 1.5 amp host C-6 from survival is good for 750Mw output and is a nice color Red. The beam on the Red one is very much like a bar rather than a dot. Both have the three element lens.

With the linear, I would use two 16340s. That what i got on my 650nm, two 3.7v batts with a moh linaer set at 378mA.
With one fully charged batt, it might not be different. However, when the batt drops below four volts, power will start to drop. It's likely that it would shut off before the battery is fully drained. With two batts, you could run them into the ground and not have a power drop.

The linear drivers are designed for two batts due to the voltage drop.
 
Yeah, I now have about 8 Ultrafire 16340's (4 880mah and 4 1000mah).. they are superb.
 
If you ever decide to roll on one 18650 seek out the Panasonic 3400mAh cells on FastTech. Those are hands down the best 18650 cells available. Panasonic does have a 2900mAh hybrid cell that's capable of higher sustained currents but IMO, those are only useful in single cell(boost driver) 2-3W+ 445nm builds since the 3400mAh cells can handle 5A sustained anyway.
 
Hazer, The Panasonic's are great, but as far as I know no Panasonic's have a protection circuit built in. Just don't drain it too far before recharging it or it may damage it and it is possible that you may not be able to recharge it. There are a few companies that use the Panasonic and add a protection circuit but they are pricey. On set I bought cost me about $27 for two of them.
Are you happy with your 445nm and the 635nm? I was curious if you have checked the power of them. Just wondering if they were about the same power that mine are.
 
I use those exact cells in all my flashlights. I buy them in threes so they are even cheaper.

If you want to save some cash and still get protected ones you could always grab the 3100mAh version HERE.
 
I tore down my old dell laptop battery pack a couple moths ago and salvaged 3 18650's out of it..not bad for free and they hold a full charge

where do you get them in three? i know they have cheaper since i have the 2900mAh version :) i know of where to get new panasonic, sanyo or sony 4 packs of 2200mAh for ~$4/battery shipped but they aren't protected.
 
I have never seen the 3400mAh Panasonics sold individually. I could however buy four and sell you three of them for cost. I am actually still working on stocking them to sell its just they are painful on the wallet to stock.
 
Phoebus, I have torn down several laptop batteries and some have even 10 cells in them. Even in a old battery that has failed, after testing the cells and recharging them usually only one or two cells are bad and the rest function at full capacity.
 
@Sb855 yea I found 3 good 18650 cells plus I just received 2 16340's pretty cheap from another site..wait for it 2.37 shipped,there ultra fire's.It's called banggood.com.Takes about 3 weeks to get stuff but a lot of there items are stupid cheap.I used to get most of my RC stuff there but I see a lot of items that could be used for this hobby..I love to repurpose
