First 405nm Build, Need Advice

Hey everyone, im thinking about building a blu ray laser..i have build red lasers from DVD burners before and all went well..so i want to try a 405nm before i go to 445nm..
Im thinking about using the PHR 803t diode, is this a good idea? Or no one uses this anymore? Im asking this because im seeing alot of talk about 12x, etc diodes..
I came across this PHR sled on ebay and the price is seems very good..

Also im looking at a driver that is made for 405nm and the price is also good..

Will this be good to use? whats the best mA that the PHR-803T should be run at without killing it? and is the driver any good or should i use a Lm317 driver? also whats the advantage of using a flexdrive type driver as oppose to this one? and last whats the best battery voltage to use for the driver chosen?
I know i have alot of questions but i really hope someone could help me out, thanks in advance, much appreciated..
 





PHR's are a great start into the 405nm wavelength. That driver is fine, but you'll still need a test load to set the current. Please don't forget laser safety glasses.

The driver has a range of 0-400mA, what is a suitable mA for the PHR-803t diode? I know some drivers uses voltage to work, like the LM317 driver, and the Flexdrive doesnt (Please correct me if im wrong), does this driver need to be powered? will the voltage drop after passing through the driver?
Also What a good safety glasses to use when working with 405nm lasers? Thanks..
 
Hey, thanks for posting this on the forrum. The information that the vets have been giving you is helping me as well :).

you should check out my post "Hey, curious question..." i probably shoulda named it something else, not many people are checking it out D:. But currently i ordered the same driver/phr sled as you. Roughly the project should cost around 40 bucks (for mine that is). But i am also curious on laser protective glasses.

Don't exceed 110mA with a PHR.

I renamed it, and yes: i figured that was my issue cause most assistance came from "laser named/themed titles"

This driver appears to be a boost driver, so that if you can give it ~3.7v you'll be just fine.
 
I'm not sure if it concerns you any, but I usually order 2-4 PHR-803Ts at a time and select the "best" of the bunch for my projects... since they are so cheap.
Usually there is a bit of variability in the diodes and some will have a longer wavelength (meaning brighter beam!).

In my experience, the longer wavelength ones are a little less efficient but the beam is more visible and sharper (not so blurry as near UV appears).

The ebay link you referred to says shipping is $6. You could buy the same sled from hightechdealz.com (the owner of the shop is a forum member) for $10 with free shipping. ;)

Ok kool! so what u are saying is that if i put 3.7volts in, i should be getting 3.7volts out? The driver wont be taking any voltage for use?

Ok thank you for the suggestion, much appreciated, anyway to save on my projects are a big plus..is this $10 shipped worldwide? And where is it shipping from?
