*Finished* Pics & Vid -Xbox HD DVD (Blu-Ray) Laser

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

think i may just be really tired but i can't seem to find schematics for bluray driver.
well....nothing for a small driver to fit into flashlight

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

We have GB's on laser diode drivers, though the current one just ended. Search the forum for "DDL driver", that will run reds and Blu-ray diodes.

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

Don't forget that depending on your driver you may need up to 6 volts from you batteries.

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

i'd really like to just build driver on a board i already have. prefer not to surface mount anything but will if need be.
running off 2 AA batteries would be nice vs a 9V due to fact that i dont have 9v charger or battery.
basically just need part info and schematic then i'll just figure out how to cram it all into the module i ordered from dealextreme

edit: alright just installed express pcb so i can rough idea of how the parts will be fitting
and on second thought, i have 5 pairs of 1000mAh 1.2V AAA batteries so hopefully i can make those work vs AA batteries.

there's current pcb blown up, obviously i'll have to cut some traces and shrink down a bit but i think it'll work fine
the width is same as AA battery diameter

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

just bought a flashlight hoping it will work. also got charger and 2 cr123 batteries which i have stuff that uses em so if they don't work for this, it will be ok.
came home to email saying my hd dvd player has shipped. basically now i just have to wait for my module from dealextreme to ship... hope it's faster than other people's experiences.
until my stuff arrives, i have all this time to find some schematics and make my driver board.
it's to the point where i've spent enough money on this that i cannot afford to mess up.

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

guess i have to buy driver cuz just realized the size problems...
dont care bout a pot on it though, just wanna regulate it to work at close to peak with 2 cr123 batteries at 6V
not sure of best one though. can't really look too much tonight i guess, wife playing sims

EDIT: do i really need a huge regulator if i don't wanna have control over stuff? i just want it to be on or off, no adjusting power and what not
what's the minimum parts for just hooking it up to 2 CR123 3V batteries?
all i want is for me to push a button and it works :)
figure if i get down to few enough parts, i can still make my own board that protects my diode.
sorry for talkin so much, just really excited to do this.

EDIT2: arg i'm bout to give up... i've searched and searched for a minimal driver to build and fit in flashlight and can't find one

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

um that Laser Module is very small, its not the size of a flash light.
you wont even fit a corner of the driver inside that module.
basicly only the laser diode will fit in there along with the lens.
stick everyhting in a different case/box

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

Yes, take off the bottom part and isolate the driver so it dont short out.

I'm almost finished with my driver. It will be extremely compact. About 20mm by 10mm by 10mm. And it can have as low as 2.5 input volts. I will post pictures and results once I'm finished.
I picked up a 360 HD DVD drive at circuit city for a harvest. I have the 405 diode running at 40ma and its putting out 16mw. Its pretty sweet although its pretty hard to focus for longer distances.

If you have a laser meter could you measure how many mW this 405nm diode outputs at 35mA?
At 35 ma i'm getting about 10mw. although at 40ma i am now getting 15mw instead of 20mw. I hope the diode ain't burning out. It seems very temperature sensitive too. I get between 14-16mw at slightly different room temperatures.

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

k just extracted the diode, now just waiting on my module to arrive and also gotta build driver.

Thanks you so much, thats really really useful.

I will have the driver done saturday hopefully. I am using an LED driver chip that is 3mm x 3mm with 10 pins on it, lol. So unless you have crazy soldering skillz, you would need to get a board to attach it to thats made just for this chip. It will have about 5 components with it too. Ill get the schematic and pictures of the actual board up soon.

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

... that's pretty small.
hmm where you get the board?
guess i could buy some non etched board and draw traces and dip it in that good stuff then surface mount everything. need superfine point though.
hell that would make it tons easier. i've only etched one board before though and it wasn't surface mount and had bigger traces.
guess i'll wait til your schematics are up before i start designing the board. should be able to make it pretty darn small.
course i'll throw out the whole idea of etching if ya have a better way to do it :)
