*Finished* Pics & Vid -Xbox HD DVD (Blu-Ray) Laser

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

Well, hopefully I can find my multimeter when I get home, and will be able to do more experimenting. I think I need to replace the resistor in the current driver I have with a 33ohm one (according to digging more in the thread). I'll try the driver on the red laser from the drive, but I'm not expecting any glorious results. Here is to hoping, results will be posted later.

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

Well, the results are in. I'm running 9v into my driver, and I'm seeing a 4.5v drop over the diode @35mA. The diode does not seem bright at all, however, I don't have a focusing housing (just running the diode without anything). There does not appear to be any beam, but a very large dispersement of light (does a housing correct this?). Well, I dunno...

a diode without a housing will just make a blob of light, you need the collimating lens in the housing to shape that light into a beam

Then I'm off to buy a diode holder/lens assembly. Will any laser assembly from dealextreme (for example) work?

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

I will be putting the laser in the flashlight tommorrow. So friday I will get some pictures and get a schematic of my driver circuit. Good luck with all your blu-rays!

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

I picked up a 360 HD DVD drive at circuit city for a harvest. I have the 405 diode running at 40ma and its putting out 16mw. Its pretty sweet although its pretty hard to focus for longer distances.

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

grrrrr i can't win a drive on ebay due to trying to get one way too cheap
someday...

If you have a laser meter could you measure how many mW this 405nm diode outputs at 35mA?

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

well, just got one on ebay. lacks the remote which woulda been nice for regular media playback.
guess i have no choice but to rip it apart once it arrives.
i will definitely need to see some completed schematics on a driver board though.
i already have a board i cut down and will trim more if needed.
as far as a module, mariomaster, is that one you linked... http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5914 gonna do the job? if so, i'll go ahead and buy it hoping all my stuff will arrive at same time
can anyone make part list i need to go buy for the driver board? i'd like to goto fry's tomorrow to get all my goodies.
I was thinking either a 9v battery or maybe... dang i dunno
guess ill just do a regular flashlight one

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

hey guys, im not sure but i think i may have fried my 360 diode :[[
i made my LM317 driver circuit and i run the diode at about 40 mA, but i only get a little flash of purple light every time i connect the diode. no constant light, just a tiny flash. i guess i killed it x.x

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

Oh sorry to hear that. But should it still be able to make any reasonable amount of light if its dead? 40mA is driving it pretty hard.

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

crap, 40mA is hard??? x.x i got the impression that 40-50 milliamps is average for a purple diode. dang. how much are you planning on using?

Re: Xbox HD DVD Laser

I've heard 30-40mA. I'm running mine at 35mA. But no one seems to know who makes this or find a data sheet for it. So who really knows?!?!?!?! :o

i was considering these as i really like the ultrafire cases. just curious as to how well either will work.
i just ordered the laser module from dealextreme and im gonna yank out the red. considering using the same method though by using wires from the driver vs springs. just need the right flashlight for the job.
time to do some research i suppose...
