External HD Issue... Need some brilliance here

I used to like WD... I switched to Seagate now. Both me and a friend bought a drive from WD, they both died a month later, RMAed them and they sent us both refurb drives and they both died 2 months later... after that I said screw WD.

Does the disk spin up? Have you tried putting it IN your computer or using a different enclosure?

I think he said he voids the warranty if he takes it out of the enclosure. Can check for spinning with ear though

Jup WD isnt as good anymore...i had 3 discs crash already....usually those greenline disc seem to crash occasionally

Question when its on, and you hear it spinning, do you hear a faint *TIK*?

I had this happen 2 times already, when i opened the hd and looked at the discs i noticed this realy small dent / scratch on one of the discs....

So i used some backup recovery program, forgot its name, took the data off it that wasnt doomed and used the discs as frisbee's.

Bought a samsung and a seagate after that and no problems so far

Ps also never ever EVER take maxtor hd.....just saying

All this over a few GB of TV shows ?!?
You will be able to download them again for a fraction of the trouble of trying/paying for recovery.
If you had returned/replaced it first thing like you said you could already be part way through the downloads by now...

Yeah I've had HDD crashes too. Lost 15 years of music files. Even if I could remember every song title and artist there are quite a few "rare" and special tracks that will never be replaced. And there was just too much to have it all backed up on burned media. (Like all my pictures of my son now. Burn back ups every 6-8 weeks !)

Warranty?... you mean the process where you argue over the phone with a rep and end up paying $30 to send it there and back, and wait 2 months only to lose your data anyway?

Just take it out. There's a good chance it's still working and the enclosure is to blame. That's been my experience, anyway.

:crackup: LOL - That's usually the process. Warranty through manufacturer always sucks.

Forget about data recovery. Personally I'd pull out the hard drive and try to plug it in directly.

Unless you paid a lot for it.. in which case send it in for replacement.

When redownloading just be careful to stay under your monthly download limit. My ISP got really pissy when I pulled ~3.5tb in a week backing up my work server.

I just backup my music and docs and anything else I care about onto amazon S3 it's cheap and rasy.

I nowdays use a nas with 2x 2tb on raid 1 in it, the downside for me of that is that it aint so portable anymore

That doesn't include external storage, with that I would need to backup ~4.5tb @$0.125 not cheap at all.

Plus uploading that much on a regular basis required quite a bit of bandwidth:can:

What you need is less data

That can't all be mission critical non replaceable (or at least very hard to replace) data.

I have about 90 GB worth of stuff I actually CARE about on S3 for about $8 a month, I have much more on my PC that I could replace.

Seagate is horrible. They used to be the best until they acquired maxtor. Now, their drives are shit.

Anyhow as someone mentioned earlier, you have a choice to make. Either gut the enclosure, thus voiding your warranty and swap enclosures, or bring it back to the store for an exchange and lose your data. Depending on the data, I'd do the latter of the two. I know it sucks losing 2TB or porn, but it happens sometimes.

It sounds like the external controller went bad, since the drive still spins and all.
