External HD Issue... Need some brilliance here

UPDATE: I went to dick smith today told them whats wrong he had a look and told me they have to send it to WD who'll try and recover the data and if they cannot then they'll send me a new one. What sucks is it will probably take like 6-8Weeks

That's just a line retail stores use to shut the customer up... wD isn't even going to look at your drive...

Indeed.. they only thing they might to is try to connect the whole device to see if its actually physically broken in any way, but if it is, they will just throw it away and send you a replacement.

Given the replacement cost of the drive its not worth having a technician working on one for more than a few minutes. I've never heard of anyone getting their data recovered when they sent in a broken drive. Something beyond an automated repair of a miswritten bootrecord or fat table is just not worth it for them, no matter how precious the data was to you.

I don't think they even do that.. I think they just either toss them or send them right to the refurb plant to harvest for parts.

So in other words 6 weeks to do what could have been done in 6 minutes at the store.

Yep, or 12mins depending on the driver from the store to your house where you then spend 5 mins replacing it, and you get the DIY feeling.
