I have bought the famous HL63133DG diode. This diode is the best diode currently on the market for 638nm color. The wavelength of 638nm is much brighter than traditional 658-660nm diodes.

Some specs of the diode:
Visible light output: 638nm Typ
Optical output power: 170mW CW
Low operating current: 250mA Typ
Low operating voltage: 2.8V Typ
Package 5.6mm
Single transverse mode
TE mode oscillation

The host will be the Ehgemus laser with two 15270 li-ion rechargeable cells. I bought it from offroadfreak8582 a few months ago. It already contains a low power A140 diode. I removed the diode and decided to re-use the host for the new diode. This laser is non focusable.

The $140 diode. :D

All parts on the table. The original driver was a rkcstr microdriver from 2008 ! I decided to use a more modern X-Drive mini V7.

More close-up.

I like pressing diodes. Feels like a manufacturer :)

All connections wires up. I use a case negative construction. The driver is set at 320mA.

The back end of module. The wire sticking out is for the battery positive connection.

The complete module. The lens is standard acrylic lens from Aixiz.
I could use a G lens but I want better beam profile than more power.

The unfocused dot. This is what you need for a perfect dot.

Battle of the 638nm. :)
left: 206mW Mitsubishi 300mW diode
middle: 210mW Opnext 170mW diode, the dot is better than the single mode Mitsubishi 110mW diode.
right: 60mW Sanyo 40mW diode, look at the wings on both sides of the dot.

BEAMSHOTS !

And at last the LPM chart. The 110 is a typo.

I hope you like watching it ! :thanks:

Re: Opnext HL63133DG 170mW 637nm single transverse mode in an Ehgemus laser.

The finished laser has worked about 1 minute and then it stops working. After examine the problem it turns out the driver has shorted inside the aixiz module.
I should have used tape around the driver to prevent shorting against the inner wall. The new driver is now the linear Mohgasm driver.
I used some polyimide film to insulate the driver. Luckily the diode has survived the catastrophy thanks to the clever design of the X-drive.

Hey whats that about failure? Looks like it was a big success! :) Once again fantastic laser and pics! Sorry cant rep you...:( :gj:

Wow lucky! I killed a mits 500, that was bad enough, but to kill one of those ouch! Glad to hear it finally worked out!

Beatiful laser Blord!
I'm glad the diode survived. I hate to see $140 go down the drain.

nice work blord! i've begun using heat/shrink tubing around drivers inside modules. no more shorts.

Awesome job.

I Kapton tape all my drivers.

Very nice assembly,

I prefer to use long focal lenght too for laser pointer :yh:

Because at far distance, the beam has a higher W/m² illumination.

Again a really awesome build!!!

but...210mw? I bet it could do 300mw easily since the 120mw rated diode from opnext
reaches 230mw:na:

Nah just joking I wouldn't testing on a 140$ diode myself altrough the new ones seem to be pretty tough:D

Also dots of single mode diode look better if you dont push them hard;)

I didn't push this diode very hard. It is still an expensive diode at $140.
And keeping the output nominal will help to keep the wavelength at more desirable level. :)
