Ehgemus Custom Host Review

I recently had Ehgemus make me a host.

It is based off of the Mini RPL style, Aixis fit host found here:

http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/custom-rpl-stile-host-aixiz-module-cr123-battery-43088.html

I loved the look of the host the first time I saw it, and I had read previous reviews concerning
his machine work, and I have to say that I am not disappointed.

I had Ehgemus add an extra set screw in the head, and add length to the barrel to fit a
second CR123.

The best part was the focus adapter he made me. Just like the adapters made by Jayrob,
Ehgemus made it to fit around the Aixis focus ring.

More on this later..

I stayed in contact with Ehgemus for a couple weeks, just asking him about what he would
be able to do for me. He was very straight forward with his answers, and was very willing
to do what I requested for the host.

When I went to my mail box to pick up my host, I found that it was neatly packaged in a
bubble- lined envelope. The host was tightly wrapped in it's own layer of foam, and the focus
adapter was taped to the head to stay secure.
Unwrapping the host was very exciting, as I found it to be best looking piece of machine
work I had ever seen!

The host is an even 5.25 inches long, (just over 13cm).

The outer body of the host is of course, a brushed looking aluminum. The seam for the battery
tail cap is so smooth, I can't even tell that its there until I start to unscrew it. The threading on
the tail cap is very smooth as well. So smooth that I can literally spin the tail
cap on, as the threads just seem to glide along on their own.

The tail button, is nice silver color. Though the button is plastic, it nicely fits in with the look
of the rest of the host. The button has a little bit of give behind it, but that's the way that I
prefer it. A stiff tail switch just isn't as easy on the fingers..

Now as for the Focus adapter, I have to say that I'm very impressed with Ehgemus. What happened
here proved his ingenuity.

Since this build is to house a 12X diode from the BDR-205, I was looking for heatsinking, as
well as the ability to focus the beam without burning my fingers. (Taking heed from Hemlock
Mike's and FrancoRob's warnings)

Here's what I drew for Ehgemus...
(It's embarrassing to post this, since it was done with MS paint)

I was hoping for the focus adapter to sit "flush" with the rest of the head of the host, when
I set the focus to infinity. That way, I could screw it all the way in to achieve an easy infinity
focus, and then just screw it out a bit for closer burning. When bringing the
focused dot "in", closer to the laser, the gap between the focus ring and the host would
get larger. However, not in this case. Ehgemus allowed the focus ring to fit AROUND
the head of the host, so that there is no gap at all!

Focused to infinity setting:

Focused for Burning:

There is always aluminum there to support the ring! Please take note, I did not even ask for
this specifically, I can only assume that Ehgemus found this way to be more fitting.

Here is the adapter itself:

I asked for a small exit aperture... because it looks cooler that way. I had to make sure not
to make it too small, so as to not block any light. The 405-G1 will keep the initial
beam diameter small enough.

Here you can see the lip that hugs the head of the host:

16659_1182633568822_1317690211_30501803_674915_n.jpg

I finally get to put this 405-G1 to good use!

Overall, I am more than pleased with the results of my host. All of this extra stuff I asked of
Ehgemus, came for only a small price more! Now it's time to find me a proper foil label for this
beast for when it's complete.

I would definitely recommend Ehgemus' work for someone who wants a
more unique, and flashy host.

Ehgemus, thank you for the beautiful host, and for the quality service!

That's some really nice work...

I like the way the focus ring adapter is designed too.

my 2 didnt come with a focus adapter... :( was that extra?

Yes, I requested it. The paint image above was a simple description of what I had requested.

The extra set screw was $5.

And the focus adapter was $10.

$50 for such a host is definitely a good deal.

I'm just hoping that no one orders one quite like mine... I like having an original!

:D

I'm going to save up for the rest of the trio as well! I just had to get the high power blu- ray first..

Any questions about it? Anything I could add to the review?

Hey Tyler
Just had an after thought,
If in future you ordered another endcap, that focus adapter could potentially get perfected even further by allowing a rubber lens dust cap to be fitted for extra protection for that 4.5-G1 by lathing a fixed step 12mm diameter by 4.50mm deep.

I'm not too sure I'm following too well...

The 405-G1 will be glued to the focus adapter with some silicon.. I'm keeping this inside of a nice foam - lined gun case for storage protection.
Wow I will have lots of people here on the forum to thank for this build when it's finished. The 12X module is on it's way to me right now!

but, i didnt know you could burn your fingers when trying to focus?! do the new 445s do that too?? haha sorry if thats a noob question, but i thought it took a second or two to start feeling heat, not to burn!

Shorter wavelengths tend to bite quite a bit faster than your greenies or reds..
