What is the probability that an ebay "as-is" laser works upon arrival from your experience? Isn't it impossible to figure out if the seller really doesn't know how to work the thing or if he knows it doesn't work, and is trying to sell it off by saying he doesn't know how to work it?

Wouldn't that be nice . . . . .

The world of used (especially salvaged) gas lasers is fraught with peril

I research and buy A LOT of used, small-frame, air-cooled, gas lasers

I'm probably pretty good at "reading through" the crap posted by un-knowledgeable and dishonest sellers.

Even with my experience, when I look around my shop, I see six heads and five PSU's waiting for the next toxic waste "round-up" in my area

AND this will NOT be the first load of stuff I've taken to a toxic waste round-up

Part of the "hobby" of used gas lasers, is wading through broken stuff and repairing the broken stuff that you can

You REALLY need to read more and curb your enthusiasm

2212-4SL = A laser rated for 4mW of single line (488nm) laser light
ALL of the "stickers" are "stock" stickers used on all of the low powered argon lasers made by this company
You MAY get more than 4mW out of it, but the odds that you will get more than 20mW are astronomical
You most certainly will NOT get multiple color lines from it

Also, this little statement "cable has been cut" Is a HUGE red flag
You not only have to have the plug(s) needed, you have to re-wire it correctly to be able to even test it

Peace,
dave

Where have you been?

I just sold off three of these (1@ 8in & 2@ 6in) for less than cost

The only bare tube HeNe I have on hand right now is a green HeNe with PSU for $100, plus shipping

**EDIT** LOL! I just looked at that argon laser auction. The cord was cut right at the laser head AND does NOT come with a PSU
You will not only need the plugs, you will need the umbilical cord as well AND have to still get a PSU for it

For $150, plus shipping, I can get you a tested and guaranteed, 25-35mW, 488nm argon WITH a matched PSU
You may have to add a mains plug to the cord to match your wall socket or add a fan, but that would be the extent of your "work"
I probably have a "plug-n-play" 488 out there for ~$150 plus shipping

Well then.....Apparent;y I do, I just got excited and posted it :/ Glad I don't have the money to drop on it, or I'd have one helluva paperweight :/ Thanks for the insight Dave.

Why the f:)ck did the seller cut the cable of that poor uniphase argon? makes it useless :tsk:

Many of these argons are being replaced in the equipment.
The person making the switch is being paid by the hour or is charging by the hour
If they can just snip off the cable and pull it out,
it is MUCH faster than disassembling the unit.

Also, it is pretty standard procedure in this kind of work to cut the
cord/cable when the component is defective
It keeps them from mistaking a bad one for a good one

Look around eBay.
You will see quite a few in this condition :(

dave

Dave's correct, keep reading and keep an eye on the sales you see around. Sometimes, even though it's sold as is, untested, you may get a working unit.....it's a gamble though.

This is a useful link for telling what some of the Commercial HeNe's are labeled as...I keep this bookmarked for easy reference.

Curb your enthusiasm a bit, but remember you can still score if you know what to look for......(my latest ebay score @ 594nm ;)....$75)

ZOMG!
Good things come to a diligent and patient man

Peace,

LOL thanks! I have been keeping my eye out for a long time now.

This one came up for $75 obo. Funny thing is, the seller had about 5 other tubes...all were Reds and all were more expensive than this one.

This has a pretty wicked artifact, but i'm not using it for anything technical.

wow! good find 532!!
don't know how i missed this one, i usually search a few times a week. 594 became my favorite wl a few weeks ago.

It was only for sale for a couple of hours at the most.....it was 'or best offer' but I didn't want to risk loosing it while I waited for a reply on an offer, besides $75 for a 594nm HeNe in hopes that it worked is a good deal!
