Does Your PS3 Bluray Burn?

DrLava & I tested our 6x diodes the same night. I didn't post my graph because our data was so close and his graph is nicer looking. He pushed his to 120 mA and got about 100 mW. I'm running mine at 130 mA in the kryton barrel and get ~125 mW.
I did push mine to 160 mA for just long enough to get a reading of 160 mW but I don't recommend going over about 100 mA for long duty cycles.

The diodes are all in dual housings and the first one comes out easily. I damaged the window on my first diode and was slower and more careful removing the second and third !!

Very nice pointer! I always have big problems to fit my projects in a good case :'(
I had to put my last laser pointer in a chocolates box :-/
 
It sure seems that some PS3 sleds had a 2x or 6x in them. The regular PS3 diode won't do that 80 mA and survive.
As for housings, The Kryton head holds the diode and lens, there a ton of room for the regulator AND you can use one big cell or two small ones depending on the voltage needed by your circuit.

To keep it safe, im going to make the first one in a nice big heatsink. The good thing is that at least these diodes should prove to be consistant if anything. With the generic ps3 sleds, the numbers seem to be all over the place. I wonder if genuine sony sleds would give the higher outputs more consistantly? Also I havent had problems with the 7805 on the sled diodes, but have read a couple of posts which state they wont be a suitable regulator. The ones I have used are good for 5.4v @ 7.2 in and 5.7-5.8 @ 9v in. Do you think this regulator will be an issue? To be on the safe side, I will of course start on the lowest current possible with the driver. Do these diodes perform better with a little warm up first? My ps3 ones tend to output 50-60% more once they hit a decent temp. Mind you the winter this year had me starting at lower outputs on my greens (of course) and the blu's.
 
YES  :D  :D  My 6x is a little cold blooded.   If I warm it in my pocket, it will go about 10 mW more.  I have not see a heat build-up problem with an Aixiz module or the Kryton head.  I think COD will be the killer on these.  Time will tell.  As the price comes down, people likw us will be more willing to give one hell to see what happens.  My graph hasn't found the knee yet.

Body temp does seem to be the ideal temp, with the convinience of a nice cozy pocket :)

Mike, that's an awesome job on that laser there! I know that the Kenom barrels won't hold a Meredith module/lens. But, I am curious if you ever got a chance to test the difference with the Meredith glass lens that you ordered. You should get about 30% more power with it, than the acrylic lens.

Jay -- I'm looking on how to mount a 5.6mm -- I don't like that spring loaded mounting for good heatsinking.

WHat is considered the maximum that the regular PS3 diode will take before it dies? Mine been running for probably 10 hours at 50mA and it just keeps lasing like a champion! Unfortunately, this is as high as I can take it without changing the resistor. And I haven't done that yet heh.

Your diode is from a "normal" PS3 sled(18 mW max)?
I read everywhere that the maximum current for a decent lifetime is threshold current+10, so 50 mA seems very high, although is a very interesting experiment. 8-)
Mistakenly the first time I was running mine at 46 mA, but later I reduce it to 42-43 mA (I still using it at short duty-cicle) and it 's ok for now.
 
Also I havent had problems with the 7805 on the sled diodes, but have read a couple of posts which state they wont be a suitable regulator

I have  2 blue rays successfully running from 7805 drivers and 2 on LM317 drivers, the only difference I have found is that with the 7805 you can run from 2 X RCR123A's or 2 X 10440's and with the LM317 yiou need 9v so you cannot get it into such a compact host.

Is that your ps3 diodes or 6x? Im assuming you mean 6x, and that in deed is very good news! :)
 
Well one consolation resides in the fact that the price seems to be dropping quite nicely :) I paid 400. on ebay (50. shipping) and then got burned with customs, an extra 50.!. With the prices im starting to see, I could of got 2 >:(
