Community Focus Knob - Group Buy - 2 packs left

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

hey rhd, as per the file, I checked it through and it seems like the threading is wrong on the file you sent it. It said it supposed to have 1mm threads, but arent the lenses we use M9X0.5 threads? or is it listed in the comments area. other than some that we seem like we're good to go. If we can finalize that design, the costs will be as we predicted 4 dollars each shipped. thats $40 for every 10 bought. thats cost of shipping + paypal fees + the actual cost of the focus knobs. not bad right?

nvm...sorry i jumped the gun before looking deeper into it. The threading is correct. Although, I still get an error message saying the hole for the thread isnt deep enough. It said to increase the length of the hole to 23.5mm or so...whats up with that.

That was the ONE error I could never figure out. 23mm is larger than the entire height of the focus knob.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

Ok i now got no error. but for a huge price increase. If I set the minimal cutter diameter to .72mm the price analyzer tool shows no errors and everything is good. but it does bring the cost up for over 3.50 a piece...total was like $740. Price shipped will be affected. lemme do the calculations real quick... it should come out to about $45 for 10 shipped. so theres the alternative to those pesky errors.

It's interesting - when I tried to decrease the cutter to that size, I got errors about the choice of aluminum as a material.

Can you send me back the CAD file with the change you made to get rid of the error? I'll take a look.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

the ems file has been sent along with the 3-D pictures you can post in the OP to get community feedback.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

Ya - it has a problem when you reduce the cutter size. Can't use aluminum anymore. See attachment.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

There's also a problem with the size of my inner cuts - I'm going to fix these issues, and then post the thread error for review by the board. It may or may not actually be an error.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

could it possibly be that despite the errors given by the software, the actual machinist could still pull it off. It would be kinda hard to know this since we would actually have to go through with the buy first to actually get a response back from the company.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

Let me work on a design as well, i'll send you the pictures along with the ems file once its done. the more choices the better. I just dont see anyone else looking into this thread so much. I hope we do get the neccessary feedback.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

I've sent you back an updated file. I think someone else needs to interpret this error to help us determine whether it's a problem or not.

COMMUNITY - need your input ;)

The only other change I made is to increase the quantity to 214. That way, with the +/- of 14 pcs, we'll be guaranteed to have the 200 pcs for the group buy (and may end up with some extras).

The price hits $760 for our order. That would be $38 per 10-pack. Assume $10 to ship each pack to each person, and we're at $48. With paypal fees, I think $50 is pretty much dead on per 10 pack.

EDIT: Don't worry, people will find this thread. As long as the look at it in the next week or so, we're on "schedule" lol. My theory is that this warning has to do with the max thread setting in the thread/tap machine details. Essentially, I think it views the max thread length as some sort of desirable figure that we won't achieve with our 3mm depth. However, this is a guess, and we can't proceed with a $760 order on my guess. Someone will need to step in with some insight before we can move forward.

ok got it...i will email you my simpler design. its real basic but it brings the cost down ALOT...about $1.95 piece... an order of 10 will be about $20 + paypal fees + shipping it should cost about $30 for 10. Im just throwing it out there in case a low cost alternative is desired.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

ok rhd I will use the file you sent me and email them or call them about the errors and see if we can proceed even with those errors. I will get back to this thread once I get an answer from them tomorrow.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

ok I sent them a message with your ems file attached. I asked them about the error. Hopefully they will be quick in responding. Do we need to know if we can ignore the error and proceed (if thats the design everyone votes for)? Or would you like me to ask them how to get rid of the error without changing our specifications?

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

Either should be cool - if the error doesn't matter, then it doesn't really matter if the error sticks around.

I think you should post your design in the thread. The idea of $30 instead of $50 might be appealing to some. So I'd post your render in this thread.

Question - any idea why your screenshots come out looking copper coloured, and with a blue background?

Your on the right track, depending what type of tap their planning in using for this part run ;starting, plug, or bottoming, you may only end up with 3-5 threads which isnt very deep when these numbers are so small. I havent done any calculations on this (because of not knowing the tap style) but it all depends on what tap they use. Most CNC's untilize the plug tap which usually has 3-5 starting threads (which is about 2.5mm) I beileve this is where the error is coming from.
