one very cool thing (i think) is that the 780 is single mode - no big multimode"bar" to tame. it makes a nice spot.

Yes 780nm at arounf 150-200mW are used in CD burners, 650nm are used in CD readers. They're usually both single mode and its not unusual to find them both in one package.

The 780nm is for CD and the 650nm is for DVD.

780 is for cds, 660 for dvds, 405 for blu-ray. lowering the wavelength is a cheap trick to fit more data in the same area by allowing it to write with smaller and smaller resolution. This is the same reason why chip fab at really really low feature sizes uses a very low wavelength UV as the source light for "etching" the chips.
