Well, i'm looking for a new soldering iron for the little driver circuits like microboosts.

I found some butane irons, are they good for that application? Also good for soldering diodes?

My current soldering iron has not temperature control aswell! Is there a maximum temperature for soldering these circuits or the diodes?

Does my soldering iron needs to be ESD protected?

Your current soldering iron is probably Xwatts and that limits how hot it can get. You need to have the right temp range for this work, and you should use the least amount of heat that will do the job. I use 600-650 degrees as a general rule of thumb for the diodes. Others will have differing opinions on the temp. I've been soldering for over 25 years, and I just know what works.

My 0.02

I would not use them as they don't have temperature control, and they most likely get too hot.

My Weller's most certainly do have temperature control. It does not give a readout with an exact temperature but it works for me. It is a great iron.;)

I don't use an ESD iron, and I don't think these diodes are quite that sensitive. Soldering on an ESD surface should be just fine, and if your are grounded any excess charge on the iron should bleed through you.

I am not sure I would trust the quality of anything like that from dealextreme.

Don't forget what happened when I ordered a butane lighter from them.

I just got a couple of those today. Looks like I have something to look out for.

that lighter is ridiculous.

Why do you want a butane soldering iron? The electrics seem much more simple an convenient unless you want to assemble a laser as you stroll through a park...

All five of those that I ordered have crapped out. But I have had good luck with this one.;)

Yes it was.

I find it quite handy not to have to plug it in or deal with a cord when I am trying to get into the right position. I have not found a down side to the one I use yet. I can adjust my heat level depending on what I am working on and it takes forever to go threw a bottle of butane. I am just on my second since I started building and you could say I use it a lot.:eg:

hmmm might have to give one a try seeing as your builds never disappoint! :eg:
