Bending a TEC around a heatsink or module?

G'day,

Always been curious on integrating TEC's into handheld builds. after playing with one from a PT-54 LED assembly for dtr i could see potential in it.

How would you go bending a TEC around a heatsink or 5.6mm module?
Can it be done? Does it bend? which way is better for heatsink the hot side?

I know if they are integrated into a handheld, they will consume current equal to or greater than the laser itself.

What are your thoughts/pros/cons/previously conducted experiments?

You can't bend a TEC, at least not the one I know of. They are made from ceramic and metal and they are not flexible at all. There must be a metal in between which act as a medium between the module and the TEC. Most of the time this will be aluminium. It can be machined to fit.
 
Well, instead of bending it you can just cut the heatsink into a semi circle and place a TEC between the two halves or you could cut it in half vertically and place a TEC between those halves.

It would be pretty hard to drive a TEC in anything other than a large host like a mag with some high discharge batts. You would also need a driver for managing the voltage.

Oh yeh, a TEC would take over 4 amps @ around 12v so you would need some mean sunnova batteries :p

You'd have a hard time splicing the TEC up along the junctions, if it's even possible. Maybe you could get smaller TECs?

30W is REALLY hot no matter how you splice it. Even 10W heatpiped LED heatsinks get pretty warm. You'd still need a nice fan to blow away the heat like in the A140s.

Wouldn't it be easier to make a direct press heatsink? That way you would achieve max heat transfer and have an easier mount surface :)
 
Can you drill a (small) hole through the center of a square TEC and not cause damage to it?

Yea, I think that's the option that's feasible...
direct press the LD into heatsink, then add one of these peltier coolers on the front of the heatsink... and maybe the back of the heatsink also?

brings up the question... maybe you could stack multiple peltiers onto the front of the heatsink?

The peltiers from this manufacturer show a 10mm inner hole and 52mm diameter... sounds nearly ideal for powerful handheld... now someone go out and build one!!!

That's neat, but I'm sure they designed them that way from the beginning, as opposed to drilling the hole after the fact.

Also, any clue where / how to actually order one?

Maybe contact the manufacturer for 'samples', the article states:

"New thermoelectric coolers are available in a standard product now with trial and volume manufacturing."
