Batteries....18650 style

I have just finished building my first laser. I used a survival laser stainless steel host with their battery blank board. I got a 2 watt 445nm module from DTR.

Now I have ordered 2x Ultrafire 18650 Rechargable batteries. but they are coming from china... damn you ebay!

Those batteries are 2400mAh.... I have other Ultrafire rechargable 18650 batteries but they are 3000mAh and 4000mAh.... will this make any difference? Or not work at all?

Chinese cells often have exaggerated capacity claims. A quality battery would trump any Ultrafire, but in theory, yes more capacity is better. Personally, I'm content with my 2400mAh protected Trustfires.

My build will be very similar to yours! Diode module from DTR and SL SS host as well!

I was told the Panasonic NCR18650B 3400 mAh would be the best choice!

I got protected ones.

The highest capacity 18650's at the time are no more than around 3400mAh, and unless you paid $20 PER BATTERY, it's not gonna be anywhere near. Those 2400mAh Ultrafires probably do 1600mAh or so at best.

I ordered the protected panasonic 3400ma from orbatronics for around $16-$18 each. They work great and are what they say they are. Also got an xtar overcharge protected charger. Thinking of getting some more.

I'm using the protected panasonics (on the same setup) without isues!

But with the protected ultrafire's, the laser kept shutting down/dimming because of the protection circuit

Sounds like they suffer excessive voltage sag under load. I use LG C1 18650's at 2800mAh and they work well, no dimming or other issues. Need to get some more though, too many lasers now, will probably go for some Panasonic 3100mAh cells.
