No prob ;) There was another vid of two dudes burning through a block of wood, but I don't know how powerful the laser was...

Yep, its a 40W tube. Now I just need the power supply :D

That vid is a unfocused beam, which is about 1/4 of an inch. For a comparison, that CO2 tube is like a bluray laser focused to infinity, adding a lens would help it burn just like it helps to focus a diode laser. Imagine if it was focused, that piece of cardboard would be cut in half practically instantly.

I had a 20W tube that would cut the cover of a cd case in half in about 5 seconds. I'm expecting the 40W tube to cut the case in half when I drop in in front of the focused beam. I have plans to make it all portable, 1 meter tube and all :D

There are too many other lasers I want to build, and not enough money!

I really need to finish my current projects before moving on, I'll defiantly post the results and maybe a little how-to...

"Welcome to my life..."

Talk about addiction, eh? :D This hobby is getting real expensive real fast - for everybody.

But isn't that the whole point? When hard work produces money/lasers, that's rewarding hobby then, is it not?

Also, might want to invest in some fabrication of your host you rendered out when you get the chance - Don't forget about that.

Out of all things, two are most needed here on the forum (and quite expensive): Heatsinks, and hosts.

I have some after hours one-on-one time planned with the CNC machines next weekend to try to learn how to use them. If I can figure out how, then I should be able to get those hosts made.

On a small sidenote, if anyone knows how to use mazatrol, let me know :D

I got another HeNe tube in today, got it from a surplus seller on ebay for $15 minus a $10 PP balance made it $5. Same seller I got the Power supply & tube from that are in the OP. I hooked it up to that PS and it fired right up.

The new tube is the one hooked up in the back to the right. The larger tube in front, not hooked up is my strongest one at 1.33mW
New tube only puts out .780mW, but It may be due to a small chip on the edge of the cathode mirror....

Too bad about the chip, at least it isn't bad enough to let it leak though.

I would make it into a lamp :D

I actually plan to make a small portable lamp with my smaller tube, and my mini power supply running of two 18650's. I bought a project box and a small toggle switch from radio shack, and some other random parts, now I just gotta start on it.

I have a nice green tube coming in too, should probably do something neat with that as well.

What are the HeNe tubes Usually used for?

Many of these little tubes were used in barcode scanners and in old laser disc players. HeNe's are still used in many applications.

Peace,
dave
