Attention all Americans

Sure, why not. Bring it on Dave.

Well let's see. This is about four days lectures (for the overview). Class meets for 110 minutes a day. That's 440 minutes for the lectures. I speak, on average, about 135 words a minute in lecture mode.

440 min. x 135 WPM = 59,400 words total for the lectures. :wtf:

This posting to this point ** is about 40 words
59,400/40 = 1,485

In order to type this info out, this post would have to be about 1,485 times longer than the first part of this post

I think not.

Come enroll in the class, and bring a notepad and a recording device :san:

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** The first part of this post is about 1.5 inches long. 1,485 x 1.5 = 2,227.5 inches At 12 inches per foot, this posting would be 185 feet long (on my screen) Somebody's gonna have to get another monitor

Actually, I am busy those days. Just send me the transcript. :na:

Well actually it appears to be yet another US bastardisation of the English language

This made me lol. How does one properly Bastardize a language which is arguable the ultimate bastard language in and of itself. English is a few parts Latin, a few parts old west norse, throw in some french, Norman-french, the old scottish language and a few others. And of course the original language was west germanic languages of anglo-frisian and old saxon.... :D Its a language made by fusing together many other languages and dialects :D

Given the word Solder is spoken as "sodder" pretty much universally in north america, I would blame the people who colonized this land. As the only factor that could so completely and uniformly control it's pronunciation would be if most of, or all of the original colonists that used that word said it that way. You could blame it on people from quite a few countries as north american english has more french, dutch, and spanish fused into it then UK english does.

The country of ENGLAND is the custodian of the language ENGLISH... The clue's in the name.

More specifically, English as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary is the only definitive and correct version of the language on the planet, end of.

Furthermore, the OED covers words from across the English-speaking world.

So, for example, anyone trying to argue that Aluminium is actually spelled "Aluminum", or nuclear is actually "nucular" is just wrong. Just because some random, un-authorised dictionary site, or your friends/acquaintances say so, doesn't make it so. Even the spell-check on this forum agrees!!

Finally, England's right as custodians is beyond question, and lets not waste a lot of time getting into reasons why shall we?

Right, I'm off for a cup of tea, and game of cricket in the grounds of my castle.

I've never heard a respectable engineer pronounce it sol-der. Always saw-der. I don't necessarily agree with it, but it's correct. There are lots of things like that in english. Is cation pronounced cat-ion or cash-un? It's usually personal preference...

Pisses my wife off everytime I pronounce genre. If they wanted it to be pronounced jjohn-rah, they shoulda spelled it like that.

LMAO! I never heard it pronounced that way until earlier this year. My first thought was "WTF are you talking about."

I thought your castle burnt down, fell over and sank into the swamp?

When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of England.
