I'm looking at a 5870 now, does anyone run one of these cards? I especially like the 2GB version. GTA4 needs like 1750MB to run the highest res. textures.

i am running the 5970 if that counts its 2x 5870 : ) what i can tell you is that the 5870 will be a great over clocked : )

thought GTA4 was a CPU dependent game?

also if you do get a 5870 you have to get 2 more monitors Eyefinity is where its at : )

Yeah it is highly CPU dependent, but to run the highest resolutions at a framerate that isn't <5 you need at least 1750MB of ram. I have an old AMD athlon x2 5600+ right now, I'm in sorry need for an upgrade :D
 
Well it seems to 4870 is very popular.
But i run the 4870x2.
The 4870x2 play gta 4 perfectly at even the highest graphics and resolution. but you will need above a 3.33ghz dual core or else you will bottleneck their.
i had to oc my cpu from 3.33 to just around 3.68 to get it to stay below 91% load and never had any lag and no spikes above 95%.
Great game but it only uses 1g of the 2g on my card kinda annoying but hey it works perfectly.
I love the nvidia fan boys and there 480.

And yes their right they do. but
Its the price of a dual gpu card.
It runs like a freaking toaster, very short lifetime and no oc.
Has huge power requirements even more than the dual gpu.
I think they had good intentions but the tech is not here yet for efficient single core gpus.
Still not faster that the ati flag ship.
now a 480x2 would be one hell of a card but you would need at least a 1200watt psu.

Except for Windows graphics(retching) I've only had ATI, not counting the card I
was given and the 64Mb card I couldn't walk past (it was $2 AUD).
I'm on a i3 2.2GHz(ish) running Win 7, 4Gb DDR3 & 1Gb ATI Mobilty Radeon HD5470.
 
Does 108F under load seem hot for a BFG 9800 GT OC?
It sucks 425 watts at idle.

Core Clock 635MHz
Shader Clock 1566MHz

One of my 8800s run 102 under load while OC'ed. I don't think 108 is anything serious, try manual fan control and crank it to 100% if you haven't already.
 
I'm running the NVIDA GeForce 8800 GT for mac. It's decent but not top of the line for mac.

The GTX 285 is faster on the mac by a long ways than the R4870 but that's apples to oranges as they say.

I've heard that the ATI drivers on the PC side are tweaked better than they are on the mac side. Thus the discrepancy.

The 5870 won't be out for mac until about Sept.

108f idle isnt bad its prety good mine are siting at 61'c idle or 141'f

look at nvidas new cards they idle at like 85'c and run at 110'c
 
I would advise all of you hitting 100+ temps to please go get some compresses air and blow out your card.
Don't be skimp on it hit it from every angle.
a can of it costs about 2 bucks.
Also might some of you be having airflow issues?
If you do cracking your case and inch or 2 at the bottom will help it stay cool , i say the bottom so nothing can fall into your cpu.
Try to get a case like this.

This is more than enough to keep a hot card cool, too often i see cases like this.

This is fine but people seem to think for their nice graphics card those vents will do just fine and they are dead wrong you can cut years of a gpu by choking it in there.
I am all about cooling i have used things from liquid cooling to phase change to delta fans /Nmb-Mat

These things are a very good investment, but they have a small noise issue.
When it comes to cpu/case cooling fans don't change much you buy a good set once and keep moving them to your new cpu, not like everything else.
The fans here sound like jet engines, especially when you get 6-12 running at once.
Also try to get or make these.
Fansis Washable 120mm Fan Dust Filter
They keep your case very dust free.
