Re: Argh Me matey's, she be small but deadly...

That was a good choice to stay small calibre..
You'd be surprised at the power of that BB cannon
when you have super fast moving hot gasses pushing
it out...

I have a cannon I built when I was taking shop in school
with a 3/8" bore that can go through a piece of 2X4 and
1/2 ply at the same time at 6 feet..

Dammit, wannaburn, slow down, you have to give us some time to recover our ability to rep you again.

That gun looks great, I had seen some of those youtube videos before.
"eyepatch"
nice touch.;)

I wonder what Hemlock_Mike would have to say about this....

Even with the 4.5mm BB's it still makes me a bit nervous.. looks can be
deceiving.. My father in law has his gun lic. so I know he is responsible
enough... I hope lol.

Only thing I cant find here is workable fuse.. The Gov here treats people
like they are all incapable children, though there are ways to get around
it.. Havent made fuse in years, but have not lost my touch. I got a roll
of surveyors cotton string and have a few lines hanging now. Went with
a simple mix of matches water and string ;)

If you still have yours, do post pics :D

LOL @ 'slow down'... cant work fast enough, never mind :eg:

The kind comments outweigh 'rep' anyhow.. all is welcome all the same

I'll post a pic tomorrow when I'm back in the
shop... It's not small and cute like yours but
I was in 7th grade when I made it...

I put a touch pan on my Cannon's fuse hole.
You can just pour powder down the hole
and fill the touch pan with powder..
Then with a VERY LONG lit match you can set
it off by touching the exposed powder..

Now that I think about it.... I could maybe set
it off at a greater/safer distance with a laser....

4th of July is coming up, can't you just buy a bunch of cheap fireworks and take out the fuses?

Edit: just realized I don't recall what country you are from :p

Behind the brightest beam? Sorry, not sure where that is lol

Also, this video was pretty cool if you want to make a crapload of homemade fuse

LOL, its 'brightass beam' :D I changed that a while ago.. im in Canada..
We have Canada Day on July 1st, and even then they only sell crap
at the stores here.. No 'firecrackers' rockets etc.. Only sparklers, roman
candles and airburst type 'fireworks' .. not even lady fingers :gun:

Some of the laws here are simply ridiculous. You even need a firearm lic for a
pellet gun if its over 500fps, and it has to be registered as such.

Though I must admit since I was young, because of the laws, and back
when there was no interwebz, the strict laws meant that you got to discover
these things on your own. I was making fuse and 'other goodies' at a very
young age. I gained much knowledge from all of it, and still have all my fingers!

To make a good fuse I either use a paste from matches, or a bit better, a
paste from rocket motors. Both have a good strong binder and make for
a solid reliable fuse. The process is easy and safe. No chemicals used
only water.. Personally, I like the look of the fuse in action as it approaches
a rocket. Electric ignitors are too boring :tired:

@ Jerry..

How deep is the 'pan' on yours? I might mod this one to accept both..

I was also thinking when I make mine, seeing as I like the howitzer I
want to make a breach in the rear and use common cap gun 'caps' to
fire the charge.

Is it possible to use regular matchstick powder for anything interesting? Or only fuses? Like if I were to grind it up and pack it in something like that cannon, with a .177 steel BB in front of it, would it shoot it? Or would I need actual gunpowder?

Sounds like you know way more about this than me :)

I wish my relatives were that creative :p

Thats one awesome cannon, show us a video of it destroying stuff :eg:

Wannaburn, you make some awesome stuff using your lathe, do you ever plan on selling custom hosts?

I owe you some rep

I took a few pics this morning...
It is made out of brass and it is 4.3" long tip to tip
and is 1" in diameter...
The wooden dowel is the ramrod marked for max
amount of powder to use...
I used the sulfur off match book matches...
It has that patina that only age can give brass...
That and I've never polished it since I made it...

Ive never tried using them for that, but I do recal the mythbusters using
similar in a cannon and it working.. If im not mistaken, matches use potassium
chlorate which is a common oxidizer used in firecrackers etc.

A good start for DIY rocketry is potassium nitrate commonly known as
saltpeter.. Its fairly safe but still dangerous. Anything you may try just be
cautious.. its an unforgiving hobby when rushed in to :scared:

Its a possibility, but to make hosts takes a lot of time. Perhaps when I
get a little faster at making them, I will begin to offer..

Not sure if aluminum would be able to handle it, but dont see why not as long
as the wall thickness around the bore is sufficient.

Haha.. thats awesome :D

Holy crap, what is the bore size on that??? Given the 1' O.D, that bore
is huge!

Here I am getting all gurly nervous over 4.5mm, and you're launching
beer cans lol.

What was the ammo originally planed for that?

The bore is 0.4" and it shoots 0.375" ball bearings...
Did you notice the touch pan on the pics I posted...

Re: Argh Me matey's, she be small but deadly...

9.5mm.. thats a hell of a BB 9.53mm to be exact. :eg:

Saw the pan, good idea for when you run out of fuse.

The powder I have is standard stuff from a sporting goods
store and doesnt seem to have much kick. I figure a nice
flash powder will give the results im looking for. I was going
to grind down what I have, but am in no mood to try and
reduce somewhat old powder :undecided:

Now you got me thinking ... A 22cal is 5.5mm, maybe for
mine, I will go up in size and eliminate the powders.

It would be a fun project to make a CO2 version, and I
wont have to worry about too much power.. It would give
me a chance to work on a valve system for my DIY air
rifle.

Re: Argh Me matey's, she be small but deadly...

So I had an old brass tire gauge, and gutted it out. This actually looks like it could work very well. I just need to find a steel/brass rod with a hole that fits a .177 BB, or drill it myself and pound it into the thing.
[Pictures removed, canned idea]

Looks like it could work well, doesn't it?
