ARCTIC HOST feeler! interested? READ

Hi JakeGT:

Am new to this place but put me down for one perhaps two or more depending upon price, material choices, and quality.

Would be nice to have some material options Al or Al alloy or Ti or Ti alloy shouldn't be difficult to arrange several choices.

I for one would like the host in Ti or Ti alloy and machined for hermetically sealing etc---would take one of each min if offered Al and Ti.

Hahaha. :crackup: Pontiac is doing this for us because he's a really nice guy... I personally know how rough it is to machine (and weld) titanium and its alloys. A different cnc program will have to be written for those alternative materials. Maybe Pontiac will do it, but don't hold your breath.

What would everyone think about a high thermal conductivity machineable ceramic host?

Whatever material is chosen, this one has to be a waterproof design to my way of thinking.
One drawback among many of the Arctic it is not a waterproof design. The of course come the question of how water-resistant you mean by waterproof? I would think one good for immersion to 100 meters same spec as a wristwatch good for 100 meters would be a good start---maybe later create a dive model goo for 1000 meters! lol

Maybe double o-ring seals each end and leave whether to driil or not drill the smartswitch and LED holes up to the individual buying--meaning a choice for the host to be supplied with or without?

I dont think that material was ever even up for debate. Aluminum is the most logical choice.

Also why do people care if a laser is water proof?! I have never understood this phenomena. Who is swimming with lasers? :confused:

To make it water proof they have to use additional lens covers which reduce output AND raise the price.
 
^^^^^^^ I was thinking the exact same thing, the design, from what I read is pretty much set in stone. I don't know why Encap keeps on suggesting radical changes that aren't gonna happen.

LPF diy'ers like things cheap and functional. Aluminum is the best choice due to ease of machinability and thermal conductivity. Probably 96% of flashlights out there are AL for this reason. Why change it?
I don’t like waterproof lasers because of the extra lenses that reduce out put either, helios. ;) are you going to have laser goggles inside your dive mask, encap? :D. What would you use it for while diving, anyway?
 
Waterproof, and waterproof to 100 meters are entirely different requirements in my mind.

Waterproof is a nice feature if you want to use a laser in the rain. Lasers look very attractive on a foggy/rainy day, so it's nice to have at least one that you can take out without worrying about wetness and moisture.

But waterproof in the sense of being submersible, has a very very very limited use case - presumably focussed on divers who want to point to things while under water. I wonder if even 5 people in this hobby community have ever actually used a laser for that?

In my mind, once you have one laser that is "rain proof", the whole water resistance issue probably becomes a non-issue for 99% of us.
 
Well there are a lot of types of Al and Al alloy--and I was thinking if you are spending the time and money to program a CNC machine that can cut the same thing out of anything, then make some material choices available-would be nice breath of fresh air.---I mean the machine is doing the work anyway not a big thing to cut whatever material in the shape of an Arctic.

Waterproof OK maybe not really waterproof. You have to want to use it in or under water to whatever degree to desire that so first you have to be swimming and/or diving person to appreciate how that might work for you.

How about at least splash resistant so it could be with you on a camping trip, a hike, or at least be able to use it in the outside world in other than perfect clear weather? Then if it rained or snowed you would not risk ruining the thing---normal outdoors enviromental wetness range consideration type of thing?
I do not think is too radical or odd to suggest given the large number of so called "waterproof" pointer already out there and available.

Does everybody really want 3 piece, press fit poor quality, not water resistant,poorly finished thing like the Arctic already is + and endcap ? If so, then so be it but I don't understand why not go for better quality than an Arctic when same is easily doable.
You can always just by up used Arctics for cheap if you want the same thing--maybe Wicked L would even sell 50 Arctic hosts to an interested to experiment with pointer group---who knows crazier things can an do happen

In any case whatever is produced I am in for 2 pieces of it with or without any options/choices at extra cost.

Also you cant just throw a chunk of titanium in a cnc machine and run it like you would aluminum. It would be ALOT more work to offer these crazy exotic materials you are suggesting.

Finally what laser isnt splash resistant? Its not like its going to have exposed wiring or just the bare diode out in the open. Im pretty sure almost every laser made can hand a splash assuming the person is then careful to let it dry appropriately.

im not trying to be confrontational but these kinds of suggestions just hold back projects like this for no reason.
 
The design is pretty much set in stone, as others have said. Encap, stop trying to change it. We passed through the changing stage a long time ago... although actually, feel free to try to derail the thread, I've made many unsuccessful attempts.

But I'd like to make the case for waterproof lasers. While 100m does seem a LOT seeing as Rayfoss and O-like always advertise a few metres I've taken my lasers in the shower and bath with me, and over summer I'm going on holiday to Spain and I have every intention of taking some lasers in the pool. The beams look AMAZING when submerged. Definitely worth trying for anyone that hasn't previously.
 
Just had a 5 minute hard look at my unused still in it's packing material Arctic S3--the host is so/so OK ---if no other choices become/are made availalbe, than I would still buy 2 exact knock offs/copies of the WL Arctic host-- same everything.

It does have the cool form factor it going for it.

OMG. :eek: that would be a mess. Have you ever seen a CNC lathe crash? It is not a pretty sight. ;)
