Aixiz 9mm mod possiblity?

mmmmmh is the beam spec of a 9mm diode similar to a 5.6 mm diode ? only one lens could produce a nice beam?

9mm diodes are usually multi-mode ( as they are mostly higher powered ) so you can't get a very nice beam from them.

Regards,

Adam

^To be more precise, you can get a decent, round beam from them, but it requires a special set of optics, not just a lens. Heruursciences sells a multimode collimation lens that will get you a nice square beam. That's probably the best you'll get using simple optics.

If you're using the diodes for burning or pumping crystals then you just need to focus the beam down to a small waist, which eliminates all concern about beam quality for the most part..

Most likely not. :p

Most high power 9mm diodes are multi-mode, if you just put it in the module it will give you a wide strip-beam with a FAC micro lens will produce a big square beam across the room. The multi-mode collimator should help with the beam profile; I have yet tried that myself.

Getting a good beam from a multimode is not really possible, regardless of what optics you throw at it. The problem is the larger emitting area, and that fundametally dictates a limit on any combinations of divergence and diameter you can produce. That is, you could get a beam with low divergence, but it would have to be really wide, or get a narrow beam with very bad divergence.

If you throw a pair of prisms into the mix along with other optics (FAC lens etc..) you can get a symmetrical beam at least.. add a beam expander of some sort and you could even approach a parallel beam, but as benm said it would have to be a bit wide.

Has anyone done this mod?
I plan to buy 8.9mm drill but it could be a bit bigger than I need.

Yes I did.
All posts are just a theory.
Jimmymcjimthejim drilled module but he doesn't have 9mm diode to test it.

I'm wondering if anyone has succeed it just with a drill...

You wouldnt want to drill it crooked or the beam wont come out right. especially if you are using a lens that needs a close focus, like a meredith for an AixiZ from Jayrob.

I'll drill straight ... it's not major problem.
Major problem is choosing proper drill.

As someone mentioned before, drill will always drill a bit bigger.

I got a 9mm diode a couple days ago. Tried the mod.. and it worked! (Well, I don't see why it wouldn't..)
As expected the diode was a "slip fit", not too snug. It would probably work better if I had a drill press..
I ended up soldering the side of the diode to the aixiz module to keep it secure. I can't say it was the most successful mod, but it definitely did work.
Pictures at request ;)

You used 8.7mm drill?
So, I probably need 8.5 or 8.6 to fit diode with press tool. (To achieve better contact)

I'd like to see picture of diode in it :D

Rayfoss sells 9mm diode housing with glass lens.
That is great, and price is really good ($12).

Rayfoss

He will send me more information about module.
I really don't know how to install diode in this module or how to focus it.
I'll let you know.

I have done this mod see, and you can't do it with a drill, a drill has a tapered point so you can not get a flat surface for the diode to set aginst and as such poor heatsinking. the 9mm hole must be tight enough to hold onto the diode tightly to ensure proper heatsinking that won't happen with a drill bit. is someone interested in one of these PM me if you want one.

Peace All Pyro... :eg:

This is the diode in the Aixiz module.

The laser works and focuses as expected. It is an infrared diode, not sure the wavelength, with a standard 5mW green driver.

And, of course, it burns things easily.

I plan to use 1W diode and heat transfer must be good.
As I can see in pictures, heat transfer is not enough good.
There is not enough good contact.
